What did It cost to run t)>o schools of
U/ib county last year?
A Tr.r.Enjurn man started off on a
hunt* for fact* and figure yesterday
monilng, to show the ponplo what they
p.t for Ihe school tax which is pxid reg
ularly and religiously every year.
:»uj eiinceuder.t Zettler was found in
his neatly littod-up office on Second
street, and after a few minutes prelim
inary talk with the reporter, ho handed
down the proofs of his coming report,
which Is now in tho hands of the
jrinter. .
The report tells a story which
read ly all alike. It is an interesting one
for the citizen of Mucon, while it is a
t oorcc of pleasure to those 'tho live out-
t i c of tho corporation which is making
buch rapid strides.
At tho opening of tho school year last
September thoie were enrolled 1,807
14-uolors in t!ie city schools. In the
ithrough tho county there were
enrolled 8,91-1. Till* makes a total of
4.751, of which 2,5^4 were white and
colored, almost evenly divided.
Then conies the teachers. There wore
CO in number. Of those 03 were white
: n l i!7 colored. Hardly one-half of the
Lvdiers were employed in the city
n Jiools. Tho city teachers reooived in
t a!.: rici $17,500, while tlio country teach
ers received $18,231, making a total of
:a .ricj f- 0,721.
Tho total expenditure for the year
amounted to $13,054.74. Of this amount
the salaries came out, together with a
cc?tof $7,333.74 for supervision and re
pairs.
la tho city, each child on entering
school was required to pay a fee of fifty
centp. This la for the supplies usually
ji.eti fiej to the echnlara in public
tr!:oj|s in other cities. From this source
H-'a*' the sum of $l,tt£5 was realized.
11 the county there was ho feo in any of
til- M'l.oohy no supplies.
For the next year there are promised
many changes. In the Girls’ High
.‘‘chool there will he flvo teachers, where
t!i« re bar. been but thro3 heretofore. In
t e Dots’ High tichooi (hero will ta
three, where tliero liave been two tafore.
"hec omcntary s.hools, white, will have
twenty-nine teachers, while the colored
trhcoUwill have eight, giving the city a
total of thirty-seven, which added to the
h*gh schools makesthe number forty-five.
ihe report is an exhaustive ono. It

The county connnitsioners havo at la-t

so many of tho residents of Viueville,
and the much desired road through by
Crump’s park to tho Forsyth road stands
in tho way of dying z natural death, un
less tho op(<csition element asks for it.
When tho notice wa3 givon by CoL
Dan’s that he would fight the commission
ers in the courts if they attempted logo

talked of and tab more desired bolt boule
vard, the wise heads in that body act to
work to find a remedy f)r their trouble.
Thu cort.-mplated rood, however, was
ordered surveyed, and after that tlio cita
tion published.
Tho nue.ing to decide the question
finally takes place ou next Thursday,
and it will bo then that tho coimnissio’i-

abandon the road.
. In its place they havo secured tlio
right-of-way. freo of charge, for a road
running parallel nlong tho lino O* the
Central os tar us tho Vinoviilo c<oawing
imd thence into the city by Forsyth
street.
tho new road will 1m much shorter
than any before proposed, and besides
this will cost the county al solutoly
nothing beyond tho working of it, it
will start at a point bovxn 1 Rid* r'.i on
the Forsyth road unr. crorsing tiic Ceu-

until it Etrikrs tho Troy race truck. It
will then ran cast for nearly half a mile,
when it will brunch oir, '.coding into the
hospital road, now in u»e by that insti

tho proposed rood will cru^a tho Vine-

A lead ti j spirit among tlio county

do no good, for wo have got to settle cue
thing and thnt is the providing of an en

Mourvo and upjsr Mibb county. They
aro going to have it right now or elso wo
nro going to lose thousands of dollars
worth of trade. I havo lure a hnlf hun
dred lotieis from all jKirtsot the districts

and everv* one urges on me the import-

"If you won’t say anything about it,
I would like to remark tint there is a
choiico for uj to got another road out
ihrough tho Roll homo property, by
which we can ojwn an entrance entirely
imlependcnt of any land holders, wlio
may sco fit to obstruct us in performing
a public duty. You see tlio commission

it would not do for us to buy the right-

the visa.

Tlioy havo fought tho bill lately intro

The bill simply provides that tho matter

They aro opposed this on the ground
that numbers of tho taxpayers who con

that much of tho stock belongs to private

fair to allow a jxipular vote to decide the

to the stock, mid several of them do not

They ap|XNired before tho judiciary
