Bated bj those who profess to ho ac
quainted with the facta, that no previous
legislature has ever left on the bands of
the governor nt adjournment euclr a
large number of acts for executive ap
proval as those now engaging the atten
tion of Governor Gordon. A very large
proportion of these were transmitted to
the executive office after the legislature
had adjourned. In order to get through
■with these within the live days limit, the
governor finds it necessary to Work far
into the night.
TOE FIT.ST VETO.
Out of the vast number of acta being
considered by the governor, he inter
posed his veto for the first time to-day.
jfce executive disapproval fell on the
resolution introduced hy Mr. Felton pro
viding for the discharge of all Inehrates
now at the lunatic aoylum.
The reason aligned by the governor
for withholding liis approval from thi*
resolution was contained in two lines.
He held that the resolution would bo in
effect a law, and should havo been read
three time* in both houses, whereas, it
bad only been read one time in the
IIouso, though the Senate put it through
threo readings.
Tho inebriates now under treatment
at tho asylum will be permitted to re
main, hut no others will bo admitted
hereafter, as tho governor has approved
the act repealing the law which emit
ted the reception of inebriates into the
asylum.
another veto asked.
The act making it unlawful for Geor
gia newspapers to publish lottery adver
tisements, or the drawings thereof, is
before the governor. I understand a
number of strong protests have been
sont to the executive from different sec
tions of tho statu ngaiust this measure,
and urging him not to sign it The gov
ernor has the matter under consideration
and will tuko liaal action on it to-mor
row.
ooyee.nor's action in doubt.
I do not know what bis decision will
be, but it ti tho opinion of a groat many
Fcnsible people that tho criminal laws of
Georgia would not bo improved to any
great extent by any such enactment
