turers on tho upper floor. The fire evi
dently had complete possession of the
upper floors before it was discovered by
the flames bursting from tho upper win
dows.

An alarm was promptly announced,
but before a stream could be got into tho
upper stories the flames had reached
across Bedford street and caught the
sta^e in front of tbe new shoe and leather
exchange uuilding iu process ot erection.

lowed each other in quick succession.
Before additional apparatus arrived,
liowever, the flumes had leaped across
Bedford. Kingston and Columbus street*,
and hud also attucked the buildings in

A GLOWINO FURNACE.
Hero tie conflagration levelled every
thing within an hour after tho first
alarm sounded. The whole structure of
Brown. Durrell & Ca collapsed with a
tremendous crash. Flames were darling
from the doors and windows and the in
terior of tho block was a glowing fur
nace. Tho dry goods and other com-

engines were dissipated in vapor before
