Tho collieries now idle are the North

employ 7.000 men and boys.
'1 here is a total lack of orders for hard

New York, Dec. 20.—R. G. Dun & Co.'i
weekly review of trade says:
Tho mild weather causes increasing
trouble. Perhaps tho coal trade suffers
the tm.st. TlieUiy gcods and boot and
shoe trade* are much affected, esjtocially
in the articles for winter wear, and in
totuo quarters even the holiday trade is
restricted by the unreasonable weather.
The bad state of tlic country road* cut*
off much trading and renders many re
tail dealer* unable to meet their obliga
tions, and small failures have become
alarmingly frequent. At Iliiladelphia
unfortunate embarrassments in tho cloth
ing trado are feared unless winter
weather come*.
THE FARMEKE* ALLIANCE KILL!NO BUSI
NESS.
Another unfavorable feature appears
in some Houthern 6Liter. Trade is
seriously affected for the lime being by
the* oiwation of tho farmers’ alliance,
which enlist* tho farm.-r* in co-opera-
Uvo trading and al«orb* tho money
which might otherwise go to settle the
indcbtciint-b.* of tho member* with the
merchants. The results in some hc.UL-
tie* aliuo.it paralyze trade, but the gen
eral tenor of the report* us to the condi
tion jc4 ^business, excepting m tempo
rarily affected l»y the weather, ia by no
means unfavorable.
The volutno of trado continues larger
than a year ago. The clearings outside
of New York arc still about 10 per cent,
larger than hut \ear, and tho raihoad
earnings show a handsome increase,
notwithstanding tho inability of many
rood* to furnish cars for ail tho freight
offered.
IRON BUSINESS Lit4 PROMISING.
The iron business teems fur tho mo
monk lens promising. The dealing* are
now small, moat of the heavy consumer*
having supplied themselves at lower
pricx** than those now a-ked. Tlie recent
sales of 00,UK) ton* of Lcfecmer pig iron
at f.’l.OO ore supposed to have
supplied the need* of the large concern*,
and with additional furnace* turned to
the production of this kind of iron the
future of prices is less clear. Rails are
quiet and it fas believed that orders have
been looked already for 7UO.OOJ tons, de
liverable next year. The actual output
this year, incluuing light rails, i# be-
lievwi to be 1,4.’0,000 tons, ogaiust 1,SOL-
447 tons last year. Bur iron lias been ad
vanced to 2 cent* by the association. Lot
is quiet. Piste ana structural irons are
firm, a surprising reversal of the usual
order of things. It is noted that an
English ordqr tor 10,COO tons of pig iron
lias been r*cciv*d with a margin of $1
per ton deposited, and au English house
has asked the prices on 66.000 feet of
wro ght iron pipe, which is said to be
■ruing m i i cents net, against 5.63 cent*
net in this country.
THE EXPORT TRADE.
The expot ta in November appear to
have exceeded those of last year by
nearly or quite $ 0,000,000, the increase
in value of cotton, breadstuff*, proTia-
