Nr.w York, July 4.*-(KpeeUl.)—In this day
and generation, when thero is so much said
and douo politically to confuso tho American
otcr, it U oidy necessary to got him straight
ened out, if lie be a Democrat, to attend a
Fourth of July coicbration at Tammany hall.
Ho will there have injected into him Democ
racy pure and simple, and with no uncertain
sound.
Today was no deviation from tho custom.
The programme was unique in that it was
consistent and in strict conformity with
Tammany’s annual ceremonies and teachings,
since its foundation, 104 years ago. It is na
tional, in that it draws its inspiration from i
desire to reach every situation in tho life c
the republic that was clearly foreshadowed hy
tho great Jefferson; it is local, because, being
at tho foundation head of commercial exis
tence iu America, its responsibility will al
ways be measured by its advantages.
People net familiar with facts, and others
not willing to listen to th« ir recital, will try to
controvert the aUtcincnt that Tammany
is not only tho oldest,
has always been tho most
consistent exponent of Democratic doctrine in
Anu-rica. Whatever its preference may have
been at Chicago, it has lmt one candidate now,
and conld Georgian's all have been nestled in
Tammany hall to hear the words oi* tlmir
world famous orators Dourke Cochran and
John R. Fellows appealing to tho other sec
tions of the country for loyalty, fidelity and
energy in electing the Democratic ticket, but
little donbt could remain about the voto of
New York city and state. Not alouc tho words
bat the manner of utterance carried
conviction of sincerity, and tho. tumultuous
applause that greeted the name of Grover
Cleveland throughout the entire proceeding!
made assurance doubly curtain.
ttjK*ak<-r» representing every section of tho
country wero present and all dwelt on th<
overshadowing importance of defeating th'
force hill. If onr Southern brethren who are
determined to stray off into mongrel associa
tions could have watered at tins fountain of
organized nud uutmifted Democracy UnUy.
it would liav# taught them the lesaou of sac-
coon when united, and cettuln defeat when
amongst themselves. Here in the
uld a.tuat© every- Southern bosom, they
stand aghast in anticipation, as H were, of
what must surely happen to our fionthern
country at large in case of HarrisonS election.
Even now the astute merchant is curtailing his
line of Southern credit to meet the crisis that
would Inevitably follow. Fear of a set-back to
national prosperity on this account is perme-
uting harness men to such an extent that it
would not b* surprising if Cleveland carried
New York by 1UU.UU0 majority. Tammany io

CLOSING EXERCISES
or the Hmithvllle High Krliool—Crop#
in I.e«wPrrHonnIs.
Smithville, July 4.—-(Special.)—The closing
exercises of tho Hmithvilln High Kc-hool took
place last Thursday and Friday nights, and
wo believe we express the sentiment of every
one when wo say they were a groat success.
To say tho eutor^iuuicuUt were well attended
does not half express it. People from far and
near wore there, and standing room for half
thu crowd could not bo had. Nothing has
over occurred in Hniitliville that attracted
such a crowd. Tho rapt attention of tho im
mense audience nnd thf hearty applause
after each rendition attested tho merit of each
night's entertainment.
.Where all did so well it would bo unjust for
me to discriminate. The young ladies ren
dered their parts excellently, and tlie boys
acted well their parts, but tho little girls
eclipsed them all. “Grandmu's btory, by
little Daisy Johnson, and “Daisy’s Fsith," yq
little Nettie Burton, took tho audience. com
pletely by storm. Little Daisy is just 8 years
old, hut was becomingly attired in a beautif tl
white swiss, and the grace and e*s* with
which she handled her train, and tho charm
ing manner in which she showed the audience
how grandma used to danco tho minuet,
would make many of society’s most stylish
yonng ladies asham.-d of themselves. Little
Nettie Burton, just 5 years old, is indited
wonderful. Her rendition of “Daisy’s Faith**
wss really aurpriving for one so young. Her
recitation and acting were splendid, and she
will certainly make her mark in the future.
Others sro worthy of special mention, but
want of time and space forbid, though I can
not close without a word to the littlo
boys, and urgo them to work hard next
wm, and T*r* lea thu little girls Jexoe!
them in oqpovt eihibition. Remember bom
they have pretty aud attractive faces, elm rul
ing and graceful maiiuers, which aided by
their snowy white dresser sod their vrcaltu
of ribbons aud lares, nuke them very attrac
tive, aud you can only win by hard work. You
must not forget that.
“All that the men today can do.
Tomorrow the boys will he doing too;
For the time is eomiov wh'-n
The hoys must stand in tho place of men.**
