A remarkable story was told to Junce
Walton In tbo supreme court yester
day afternoon. The narrator was a
woman of 27 years, who would be still
young and comely, but Instead sue
seemed an old uml iuliim woman, so
mueU had hardship and affliction told
upon bur. Her name Is Kstclla V.
Cobb, and nre year* ago her sad story
was iu il,e mouths of all tho fishermen
■ who froquet the Bay of Fundy. Mrs.
Island, where her mother. Mrs. Alc-
Kenney, now lives. In 1H7H, when sue
was a mere girl of 14 summers, she
met and married a -young flsbermun
of 23, named Lorenzo T. Cobb. For
eight or nine years their married life
was fairly peaceful. Pour children
were bom to them, the last one In the
spring of 1887. At that time they wore
living on Stave Island, ouo of tho re
moter Islands of Portland harbor. It
was in tho summer of 1887 that the
first shadows seemed to have Invaded
the household, 'l'hoy came with

Cobb family. This man seemed to havo
exercised a pernicious lulluemo over
tho husband, for from that time ho be
gan to make his home uncomfortable
for tils wife.
The first of the summer, In 1887
Cobb informed his wife one day that
he hail deeided Uml they should move
to Seal Island. In the Bay of Fundy.
Tho young wife did not havo much of
an idea where Sea Island was, but
like a dutiful wife, she began to get
as 10 per cent, of solids, when the nor
mal is 13 per cent.
A second set of causes whim Influ
ence the quality of milk grows out of
the Ignorance or careUatsneea of the
producer or seller. Where the persons

often a grave source of trouble In
handling ptilVt, not only on account of
tho possibilities of the addition of visi

susceptible to odor, various kinds ot
bacteria and disease germs. Epidemics
of srsrlet fevsr and typlural fever
have been traceable to the milk supply,
unclean cans and other utensils, nnd
particularly to propagating tia-terla.
The third source of trouble with the
milk supply is due to the Criminality
of those who handle it, elthej by ad

From (he New Orleans Times-Democrat.
London, Nov. 5.—The collapse of Sig
nor logo's opera season tu the new
Olympic Theatre has teen received with
general regret, as Signor Lngo deserved
well of the public. He is was who cm
down the prices of admission to operatic
performances and who showed iu former
seasons that it was quite possible to
produce operas adequately rendered and
staged at popular prices. In -addition to
lowering the prices of admission, Signor
Lago introduced to London many first
class singers, including the Bavogll sis
ters. He produced “Carallerla Rust

salaries! and his repertoire imitated by
his powerful rival. Sir Augustus Harris,
manager of the Covent Garden, and otlic,-

Since the opening ot the season there
has been bitter rivalry between Signor
Lago and Sir Augustus Harris, which
resulted in the house of neither of them
being filled regularly, and iu neither giv
ing a first class performance.
The Globe urges that Sir Augustus can
content himself with hi* undoubted mo
nopoly of the opera season, and leave the
supply of the cheaper autumn aeaaou
to Signor Lago.
Sir Augustus presented Wagner’s “Tris
tan and Isoido” this week. Tho work
has been rehearsed for some time, but
tlm eompaby was rathe# a scratch one,
and the opera failed to attract the crowd
ed houses that were seen during the sea

of Bispham. an American singer, who ap

London, Nov. 7.—As the lockout In
cotton trade began at the usual midday
closing hour Saturday the exact number
of operatives effected will only he known
today. Mr. Mawdaley, secretary of the
Amalgamated Association of Oporativea
of Cotton Spinners, thinks that 53,000
persons will be rendered idle by the lock
out or strike. Ilia estimate, however,
may be modified should the stampede
among the employes sprend. The Fed-
eratlou of Masters of Cotton bpluners
has never been very successful in its
lockouts, and the prescDt trouble prom
ises to be no exception to the rule. Since
the masters iasued their notice that spin
ners would have to submit to the & per
cent, reduction in tbe.r wages there hat
been considerable improvement in the
cotton trade, and manufacturers are loth
to shut their mills and forego the profits
in sight. Should the (Manufacturers
Spinning Assodatlno offer their employes
the old rata ot wages It is highly proba
ble that about 157000,000 spiudles would
continue bo run. and the number of Idle
spinners and others would be reduced to
30,000. At any rate, victory lor the
operatives is a practical certainty. Only
one mill io Heyward closes today. With
so many mills running the position of the
strikers and looked out operatives is
