Hamilton, April 9.—(Special.)—Some
time ago It was announced that Hon.
W. Y. Atkinson would speak in Ham
ilton on the 9th of April. Accordingly
the citizens . of Harris county came
pouring Into town this morning at an
early hour, soon filling the streets
with ardent admirers of the plucky
young Democrat, whose arrival they
were anxiously awaiting. At 9:30
o'clock the train from Columbus rolled
up, and as Mr. Atkinson stepped from
the platform he was greeted by a tre
mendous crowd of young and old men,
who had intermingled with the Con
federates to welcome their gallant
young champton. Prom the depot to
the hotel Mr. Atkinson moved slowly
along tue thronged streets, shaking
hands with the multitude.
At the hotel an Inforn al reception
was held. At 11:30 o'clock the people
moved toward the court house, which
was utterly Incapacitated for holding
the crowd. All the standing room was
taken up and throngs Btood In the door
ways.
With well chosen remarks the
speaker wax introduced by Hon. B. H.
Walton, chairman of the Democratic
executive committee.
Col. Atkinson was enthusiastically
greeted and was frequently Interrupt
ed during his speech by loud and pro
longed applause. He defined his posi
tion on state and national questions,
which was the same In substance ns
his other speeches. He discussed hts
legislative record and stated that it
was legitimate for a candidate to point
to his record, but the Evans men called
him egotistical for so doing. If It was
bad they would make capital of It, but
as It Is good they don’t want it re
ferred to. Ha defended his vote against
the Confederate .home and paid a
glowing and touching tribute to the old
soldiers. He said that It ts Impossible
for mortal man to know Just where
Gen. Evans does stand on certain pub
lic Issues. The general Is placed In the
very embarasslng position of trying
to make his financial views coincide
with the policy advocated by the At
lanta Journal and at the same time
with that advocated by the Constitu
tion. The general's Interview of Sep
tember last was mercilessly riddled,
and from that Interview the apeuker
showed that Hie general was abso
lutely oit the ueniocratio platform.
Mr. Atkinson’s speech was strong,
eloquent and convincing. The whole
audience was captivated and mnny
who esme Evans men went away
shouting hurrahs for Atkinson. It Is
safe to say that Harris will go over
whelmingly for Atkinson
