There were fow men at work, and everything was quiet, one would not be reminded of the turbulent events of the past few days wore It not for the large number of police who parade the river front. These were seen In all sorts of occupa tions. Some whittled long sticks of wood with their knives, others reading the newspapers' and several were tak ing a quiet dose In obscure cornera. Apparently, they were tired of levee duty and Ion* for the time when they will he able to return to tbelr old dis tricts, although where _ they are now. nothing more Is required of them than to Show their brass buttons and blue suits. A striking feature on the levee today was the almost entire absence of ne groes, and except for those who are members of the scrcwmen’s union not one could b» seen. It was said In a Jesting way by several screwmen that “a nl&per would not work on this wharf today for 340 n day," and it would seem such an opinion was not erroneous, as not a single negro ap peared this morning at any of the ves sel* to twgln work. The militia com panies were not placed on duty on the levee at 6 o'clock this morning, as It was at drat proposed. They arc nil on duty, however, at thetr respective arm- ori-s, ready to respond to any call at a moment's notice. Every oar li sax', k-us to know how the trouble will ter minate. Many would have the militia called out so that work on the terse may be resumed with negroes, while Just an many wish matters to continue as now until the white screwmen are given the work. THE STATE'S POLICY. • The governor is not disposed to dis cuss the policy that would be fallowed by the state government In quieting the violent mribs n-htoh have so thorough ly terrorized the colored laborers on the levee. He does not think this the pmpv time to talk on the subjec althourh It Is always .i pleasure for him to give representatives of the pree* all the news he can. Keluttve to the rumor that got ex tant that federal Interference would be called for hy the governor to assist In qutetiug the bdtlgercnf law break ers. he stated most emphatically that hr bad oever for a moment considered suoh a proposition and that under no clrcumatsnces would he call upon the national government, as the state mil itary was sufficient and able to pro tect Che property and lives of the dtt- xent. The governor could not be got ten to any anything In a detailed way af tho altuatlon, except that peace and the norm I conditions of business iner- csls would be restored at *ny any cost or hasanl.
