THB BUN'S COTTON REVIEW.
w York, April 17.—The Sun's cotton
"r aay*:
"'X* rose 14 to 15 points and hearted

the «hjr sitfi the tones steady am]
■ '*f 2».wJ0 bales. Liverpool advanced
M 4 Points, closing steady at a net
of •% points, wdm spot sales of
holes at a rise of 14M. New Or
leans advanced 16 points, then reacted
slightly, in Manchester, yarns were
strong, the business was small and cloths
were firm. Spot emotion here was dull at
an^dranee of 1-16 of a cent, with 100
•'"•need 1-16 of a cent and New Orleans
and Wilmington % of a cent. New Or
leans sold 2,500 bales and Memphis 1,250.
A-uwusta received today 67 bales, against
2K> Ui!j day last week and 193 last year;
Memphis, 97, against 203 list week and
M last year; St. Louis, 2*63. against 7M
last week and 44 last year, and Houston,
*Watawt UM lust week and 1,«3 last
year. New Orleans’ receipts tomorrow
are eetlmaiteJl at 3,500 to 4,000. against
408 lart Thursday and 1.246 last year. The
receipts ai the ports today were 8.040
bales, against 8,801 (am week and 8,632
last year; thus far this week they are
52,252, against 62.1M0 thus far last week.
Today's Features.—The news was
enough to make the average bear view
with aU.rm Ms position In the market.
One of the most striking fixtures is the
large demand from outsiders. It has
heretofore been said by many that
cotton could not go up because outside
buying was lacking. It* Is not Jacking
now. All the leading commission houses
down town have plenty of outside busi
ness. In addition there was a good de
mand from local. Southern and European
operators. The news was generally bull
ish. The Liverpool sport sales were enor-
mous, the Manchester ir.ja.rket was firm,
silver again advanced, spot prices here
and at the South were raised, dry weath
er and fears of frost were reported from
Texas, it Is too dry in many parts of
I^utelana and the season everywhere ap
pears to be backward.
MANCHESTER CLOTH MARKET.
AHanchester, April 17.—The Guardian in
Its commercial article says:
‘The hoKHUy feeding has prevailed bo
that the attendance has beeu meagre and
the market unsettled. Producers, guard
ing against a possible advance of cotton,
have raised their quotations. A fair
trade has been done where sellers have
been reasonable. There has been a” fair
Eastern Inquiry, but at figures generally
unworkable. The China demand has bean
e\>w and the rumors of peace have had
little effect. The business lias been con
fined to speculative orders. Business
elsewhere has been moderate. Yarns
h«*> been etrong in sympathy with cot
ton in America, with a fair business.
GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Chicago, April 17.—A very nervous un
dertone' prevailed In wheat today, even
at the most quiet times. Whilst the dis
position was to concede that the formont
was over, etili very few t.ere found who
were willing to put themselves on record
aa believing in much lower prices. It was
on the other hand generally accepted that
the heavy longs had rea&zed on the last
rise. A quick turn was made in the JAst
hour. Values began to fall away and had
dropped % of a cent, when they suddenly
halted and rapidly advanced 1H cents
from the Inside quotations. The pit wBS
altogether barren of offerings when the
rise took place and the greater portion
of the gain was'made with very little
trading. The close was strong at prac
tically the top prices of the dny. May
wheat opened from 56V4 to 56%, sold be
tween 66% and 57H, clotting at 57%s8fl4—46
to % of a cent higher tnan yesterday.
Trading in cor lote was ait steady prices,
the nominal close being firm.
Oorn.—After some flrmne*« corn de
clined out of respect to the then ruling
feeling of wheat. The brisk advance of
wheat near the close wus instrumental
In rallying corn to the extent of recover
ing only a portion of the early losses.
The close waa the «mme as yesterday,
showing neither the bulls nor the bears os
having recured amy advantage. May corn
opened from 45% to declined to 45%
to 45*4, closing ait 45%a%. Gash corn was
steady to % of a cent per bushel lower.
Oat®.—The bright wealth er brought In
eelMng orders for u*i» from the country.
The specialists and professional* observ
ing ttvl*s, offered owta fres-y and depress
ed price* wo that the outsiders wers
pissed at a marked disadvantage. A
modest recovery cams about with ths
bufcje la wheat prior to the close, but the
last quotations wers % of a cent under
yesterday for May. Cash oats wers weak
and *4 of a cent lower.
rVo visions.-No marked difference in
the character of the product today from
yesterday was apparent. Packers »old
some lard early, but the business was at
the best of a very lmllffereitt kind. The
close was 6 cents under yesterday for
May pork and unchanged for May land
and ribs.
