R. V. Ayers,
Gentlemen:—We, the commit¬
tee appointed to examine t he e >n-
vict camps in the lower part of
the countfind at the State camp
at II. K. Britchett’s seventy-two
(72) convicts, all at work, with
the exception of three or four
who are sick, though (seemingly) find
not of a serious nature. We
their quarters sufficiently large,
well ventilated and provided with
plenty of stoves for heating pur-
poses, and in chain and good san-
itary, condition. We also lind
they are amply supplied wilh
good and wholesome food diet,
being changed three times each
week from fresh to saltmeats,
with plenty of vegetables and
pickles. We find their clothing
good, clean, warm and comfort-
able and sufficient, wilh good
bunks, mattresses and warm
blankets, and tb it they are work-
ing kind and humane bosses. We
arc sorry lossy that they although have no
one to preach to them,
convicts. They are poor unfor-
tunate human beings, and their
spiritual welfare should not. be
overlooked; we recommend that
the proper authorities provide
some one to preach for them as
often as convenient and
cable on Sundays. At the
ty camp at J. W. Tatum’s wo find
19 convicts, all in good health and
working well, all seeming good, to be
cheerful; we lind they have
inattr-sses and warm blankets;
we find their clothing clean and
good, but the quantity insuffi-
eient for cold and disagreeable
weather. The present clothing is
one pair of punts, one shirt of shoes cot¬
ton stripes, one jacket, pair they be
and lint, we recommend
furnished ui'dershirt, weather drawers, by the
pair socks authorjties; for cold lind
proper we also

for all.
