the timber steers, and .1, 8. Betts
& Oo. have sold 25 oxen to G. W.
Jones to be shipped to Tennessee
for beef. This was the finest lot
of cows ever shipped from this
point. They avereaged 1,200
pounds apiece, and only 21 of
them could he put in a car. The
price paid was $24 apiece,
How often have you heard peo¬

Of all the posibilitios to build
up a high school for Ashburn, the
best seems to be the employment
of Prof. Thrasher of Oconee conn-
ty, a nephew of our Dr. Thrasher.
He is a graduate from Emerv, and
has made an excellent record as a
teacher. H ? is a religious gentle-
man of high standing, and would
doubtless do Ashburn excellent
service. The interest of the
school should be closely guarded
just at tlfrs season.
A man shabbily dressed, wear-
ing rough beard and shaggy hair,
walked into a store here the oth¬
er day and called for “a little hit
of coff'ee and a little tobacco.”
The poor fellow looked like lie
could not pay for much of either,
and he did not get enough of that
to last him long. Next fall when
he goes to pay for them he will
complain at the low price of cot¬
ton and say the farmer is a down¬
trodden race. Coffee and tobac¬
co are not necessities, but some
men will keep their children out
of school for the sake of their cof¬
fee and tobacco.
The extremists in sanctification
are not subscribers to this paper,
but they can find a bone in it to
gtlaw occasionally and then they
htiddle together and say the Ad¬
vance is fighting the church of
Cllirist. No, children, no! If you
would subscribe you could read j
the paper with a clear conscience ,
and better understand its mean-1 i
ing. . „ Borrowed , papers are always ,
hard to understand. In the lan-
guage of Sam Jone, some of them
yelped last week because the Ad-
vance rejoiced at the return of
some of them to the old time re-:
ligion. We don’t oppose sanctifi- j
cation, but the methods of some of
the tin horns who have not got it.

We have ;i reputation of
' sticking: together in this district
and we should maintain it. The
democratic executive committee
will meet the people iu mass
meeting if the people desire, and
all together a ticket can be made
up to suit the interest of this part

gather. If we meet and

know of no candidate from this
district, but let’s vote together
and try to distribute the offices
well over the county. Harmony
will not hurt us. Shall we have
such a meeting? Let us hear

The meeting that closed at the

The Methodist church of Ash¬

is working under Methodist dis¬

those who tried to run it into the
Wesleyan faith has about been
overcome by the help of John 0.

Since the middle of January 48
members have been received—84

Answer W Uilo tomatoes will grow
and produce abundantly on any medium
soil, there is one essential to their sue
cessful cultivation, and that is very
thorough preparation. If the land is
Muksoilnd so much the better, and it
■bould then be harrowed and rehar¬
rowed until not a lump remains. It is
not ueeessary to broad east the manure
if a complete eomiuereial fertilizer, with
a preponderance of potash and phos-
phoric acid, is used. Use a handful of
this, a handful of wood ashes and a
tablespoonful of nitrate of soda to each
plant, being careful to mix thoroughly
with the soil, and to prevent any of
these ingredients touching tbo plant.
After the plants are set, that, is in two
or threo days, give them a thorough
working with the harrow, or cultivator,
aud, of course, the weeds are to be kept
down throughout the growing season.
When the fruit begins to set repeat the
application of fertilizer. By this plan
the plants are strong and stocky and the
fruit abundant and evenly developed.
Stable manure may bo used, but it
should !>e thoroughly decomposed, made
fino and mixed with the soil. If the
pluuts nre troubled with insect enemies
they should be sprayed according to the
directions we have frequently given.-—
