<> n a hot sultry day an officer mael.iuo was tlr-
i.tg from an ordinary Maxim
gun at a target about 600 yards dis-
taut, and as the firing went on he saw
a great wedge-shaped gap in the top
of the target, apparently due to de-
struction by the hail of bullets. To
his amazement, however, the gap dis¬
appeared when he stopped firing. Ma¬
jor MacMabon attributes this tomirnge,
concluding that the heated gases from
the gun formed a medium of gradually
iucrousiug density upwards, and that
through this medium negative refrac¬
tion bent the rays that a wedyu-sliaped
portion the of the sky appeared betweon of the
observer and the upper part
target. The phenomenon, however,
lias given rise to somo controversy,
which is likely to continue, as this
theory is not accepted by all.
The surface and bottom of the ocean,
as is generally understood, differ ma¬
terially in temperatures. All kuowu
observations of deep-sea temperatures
havo been arranged on equal projec¬
tion maps, from which it is estimated,
states Sir John Murray, that over
ninety per cent,, of the sea floor is oc¬
cupied by water cooler than forty de¬
grees Fahrenheit, three por cent, be¬
ing under thirty degrees, while on the
127,100,000 square miles deeper than
a hundred fathoms uo animal vnria
tions of temperaturo have been ob¬
served, except possibly at the line of
meeting of the Gulf Htream and La¬
brador currents. On the 10,100,000
square miles of ocean betweon the
Hhoro and a depth of a hundred
fathoms, the bottom temperature
shows annual variations. A study of
the surface waters loads to the esti¬
mate that ovor the entire ocean the
area warmed to rnoro than forty de¬
grees is never less than seventy-five
per cent, of the total, even in thocold-
ed months, while it rises to eighty
seven per cent, iu the hottest part of
the year.
In a paper contributed to “The
Transactions of the British Institute
of Preventive Medicine’’ it is stated
that, even in a suburb of Loudon the
dust particles number some 20,000 per
cubic centimetre iu the open air, and
41,000 in a quiet room; while in the
city tho totals per cubic eontimetro
wore 500,000 when taken from a roof,
1100,000 iu a court, and about 400,000
in a room, iu other words, the air of
tlie square mile is 900 per cent, thicker
than in the suburbs, which is 111 nc-
cord with the general experience that
fogs are both more dense and nioro
frequent over the centre than in the
outskirts. But what is especially in¬
teresting in this remarkable paper is
the statement that, though dust is tho
great carrier of mioro-organisms there
is only ono of these por 88,000,000 of
dust atoms. This being so, it is cal¬
culated that a man could live 111 tho-
metropolis for soventy years and ouly
absorb somo 25,000,000 of miorobes
