After Judge Spence.
Some interesting pohl ical gossip
in connection with the Albany
circuit judgeship c mips to us
through thecolumiiBof Saturday’s
Atlanta Journal. The artical,
which we quote below, is a little
“ofl’’on one or two points, but
as a whole it G decidedly perti¬
nent and makes good reading in
this neck of the woods. It is as
follows and needs no comment:
“A prominent Lee county poli¬
tician, who was at (he capital
this morning, tells an interesting
story of opposition, which lie says
will lie brought out against .fudge
W. N. Spence, of the Albany cir¬
cuit. Judge Spence has been “on
the bench a number of years, hut
it is now reported that he is to
have strong opposite n this fall.
“The opposition, si) it is said,
grows out of the conduct of the
judge at a recent, trial of eighty-
two citizens who wore indicted
for gaming.
“ ‘Yes, Judge Spence will have
strong opposition,'said lie, ‘and
the opposition grows out of the
fact that the judge was too severe,
as we believe, in a recent trial in
which eighty-two of the best eit-
izent of Albany were charged
with the offense of gaming. The
story is that a young man w ent
to Albany and got in a poker
game and lost. $700. As a result
nearly everybody was indicted.
Among the number was the chief
of police, the mayor pro tom,
manv prominent merchants
cotton buyers and others who
stood high in commercial and so-
eial circles. Everyone of the
eighlv-two entered a plea of

The citizens have resented this
and they ■ iv they will make a

story is creating a good deal of
talk and interest and the result is
