“There is no section of the
United States to-day that is fill¬
ing up with industrious immi¬
grants half so rapidly as south
Georgia," said a well known rail¬
road man yesterday. “I have
never seen anything like it, and
nearly every one of these immi¬
grants ib doing well. The y are
all energetic and thrifty, and the
waste places are being rapidly
converted into fertile fields.
“Stump digging and terracing
is nearly always the first work of
the immigrant, and if he is of the
more desirable class it does not
take him long to put up a resi¬
dence and develop a splendid
farm in short order.
“They rarely attempt to culti¬
vate more than twenty-five or
thirty acres to the plow, but they
do their work well and their re-
ward is nearly always gratify¬
ing.
“The lumber and turpentine
industries are to south Georgia
what iron mining is to Alabama.
And this section is, therefore en¬
joying a period of prosperity such
as it lias not known since the
war.
“Lands throughout the south¬
ern portion of the state have ad¬
vanced at least 100 pei cent, with¬
in recent years, but they arc still
remarkably cheap. Splendid lands
are frequently sold for prices
ranging anywhere from if2 to $10
per acre.
“And agricultural products are
of sufficient variety to delight all
people, who believe that the far¬
mers should live at home.”—Ma¬
con Telegraph.
In the death of Lieutenant T.
M. Brumby th« United States los¬
es one of her ablest young Naval
officers, while Georgia mourns for
an idolized son; one eminently
worthy of every honor so recently
bestowed upon him by a loving
people in acknowledgement of
his gallant conduct during the
recent conflict. With a brother
editor we say “peace to his brave,
honest ashes!”
The official printing of Berrien
county has been taken from the
Tifton Gazette, by far the best
paper in that county, and given
ro the South Georgian, a paper
recently started in Nashville.
Another illustration of the bene¬
fits to be derived from a “pull.”
We stop the press long enough
to remark that there is as much,
or more, good reading to the
square inch in the Dalton Argus
as in any paper in Georgia.
It seems peculiarly sail that
Genl. Henry W. Lawton and
Thomas M. Brumby should have
met death in the midst of such
brilliant careers.
Florida’s gubernatorial candi¬
dates are running neck aud neck.
Mav the best man win and may
Dennitt H. Mays be the best
man!
The killing of Genl. Lawton
last Monday by Filipino insurg¬
ents forcefully reminds us of the
fact that the war is not yet over.
A negro was lynched in Dun¬
bar, Pa., Tuesday. Those people's
love for the “brother in black”
exists only at long range.
Judge Clifford Anderson who
died at his home in Macon Tues¬
day was one of Georgia’s ablest
lawyers.
Nobody will accuse Uncle Paul
Kruger of being a false prophet.
The South Georgia Conference
will roe«.t next year in Outhbert.
