Mill Ocean. Dec., I t, 1899.
L)v. and Mrs. T. H Thraslter,
Ashburr, Georgia.
Dear Brother and Sister: As
you will no doubt he enjoying
yourselves ere this reaches you,
will have :t few words to say
1 might help to add something to
your pleasure.
I am at this time about 1,200
miles from Frisco and am
to keep in good spirits, although
1 am in a pretty critical condition
I am still flat of my hack and it
seems as though I will never walk
again. I still have hopes that
when I reach the native land once
more I will then get. better—I
hope I will get well.
1 had, on Nov. 6th, a paraletic
stroke all over, but it seems to be
settling to my left leg. 1 have
no use of it at all and I am still
having those spells I had in Win¬
der. They have slacked up to
some extent, not so often but very
hard, and then I am so very
weak I can’t raise my head some-
times—can’t move at al! for some
510 minutes or more.
1'soinefimes almost give up hut
I think of what I have said and
often written home, that l would
return, and to look back and
think of all you who I left behind
I renew my spirit and look on the
bright side of it and all better.
For’,me to think that way I am
cheered by my messes and all my
friends who come round me, i
have, or it seems I have, the sym
patby and good wishes of all that
come round, especially those who
happen to’see me in one of my
spells. since
[ have not walked a step
Kept. 5th, nor even stood up.
was once aimom, a haeievcii, uuv
now I have picked up a great
deal and on this sea voyage I am
gaining most a pound a day.
I wish 1 could be home with
you all Xmas, but can say l am
lucky to he alive much less in
Frisco, where 1 guess I will spend
my Xmas this yaar. I am to be
treated at Presidio hospital, and
when I am able to walk l will be
discharged. * * *
I will tell you of my trip from
Manilla. I went on board of Kio
de Janerio Nov. 21st. at 4:0Q p m.
Very rough weather and was 7
days from there to Nagasaglii,
Japan. There wont, into harbor
to coal. Before reaching there
one of tho returning sick, Walk-
er of 0th lnft. died. Two days to
coal and men, women, boys and
girls coaled it from small vessels
on each hide. I w?.« curried on
deck in a chair one p. m. to see
the town and workers. It is a
prettv city, around the bay on the
mountain. Have a few’ scenes of its
contents, also one of tho ships
while she was being coaled. We
sailed then and had nice inland
sea for three days, then several
days rough again, and we have
had a few more days more smooth
but today it is getting rough a-
gain.
Nagasaki! two have died, one
was a discharged man out of ni.v
Bat., was a sargent and has been
sick since June. Was an old sol-
dies, had 16 years of service. Ilis
father is a retired Captain and
lives in Maryland. Other was a
sargant of 9th inft. W e had an¬
other one to tlie, corporal from
8rd inft. One or two mote are
very sick—all their own fault—
they eat a lot of stuff they had
no business and it soon killed
them.
1 would have finished letter oth
or day but was too dark in here,
and I could not see. And l hail
another attack that was very hard
and 1 am very weak front it.
They make me very sore and 1
can hardly move myself at all.
Well we .ire nearing Frisco u«w
