The War Spirit Wife.
It has often been predicted that
before many years the world
would witness the greatest war in
the history of modern times. The
commercial and political rivalry
between the leading nations is
steadily growing keener and more
intense, and the indications just
at. this time appear more favorable
fora general war than at any
other period in many years, says
an exchange.
There are wars and rumors ot
war, indeed, The very air seems
rife with talk of war, and unless
true statesmen, wise economists
an d genuine patriots take hold of
and shape public opinion, the wars
already in progress will lead to
other contests much more serious
before peace is once morerstored.
Our own country is at war in the
Philippines. The British have a
war on their hands in South Afri¬
ca, which threatens to involve
England in trouble with Germany
and possibly other nations. The
South American countries are full
of revolution. Japan is said to be
actively prepearing to go to war
with Russia. In iigipt, in Turkey
and in China the war spirit runs
High. On more than one frontier
the troops of rival nations are al¬
most facing each other, with load¬
ed muskets and drawn swords.
If the civilized world ever
needed true patriots, wise, sincere-
statesmen and able, conservative
leaders, they ’art needed now.
In this advanced age of civiliza¬
tion and Christianity it does seem
that controversies might be set¬
tled without resort to arms, dis¬
putes between Rations be adjusted
without bloodshed*.
The common people of all coun¬
tries, we believe, are *ick and
t ired of war. The masses are for
peace, but with ambitions, grasp¬
ing, power-loving political lead¬
ers in control there is no telling
what developments may occur be¬
fore the swords already drawn are
sheathed again. Wo could only
hope for the best, and the best
that the world could hope for now
is peace.
The Macon News reports what
is represented to have been a
meeting of the. executive com¬
mittee of the iState Prohibition¬
ists’ Association winch was held
at Mniberry street Methodist
church in that city Wednesday,
for the express purpose of declar¬
ing against the policy of organ¬
izing a prohibition party as advo¬
cated by Mr. Willingham. Those
present were opposed to such pol¬
icy and many of them announced
distinctly that they intended to
work for prohibition only inside
the democratic organization.
Chairman O. R. Pringle, of the
committee, presided and Mr. Ar¬
tur S. Bussey, of Hawkinsvillo,
was present as secretary.
