Ashburn Advance,
J.!!. KORE KiRnr sw! Msnapf.
The Albany Herald ays the He
puhlieans of the slate an; begin
iufl to»Uovv sigie of returning life.
This is a presidential <’ i
year, you know. The liepuhli-
ran party in Georgia hiliernates,
and the rank and lile show up as
patriot* only mice, in four years.
And then there is a scramble be¬
tween the i»s and the outs
control of the Federal
of the state. This year they have
commenced to stir early.
state Republican convention lias
been called to meet at Atlanta on
March 7, and we see it stated in
the Dawson News that what is to
be called a convention of the Re¬
publicans o( the Second congres¬
sional district is lo be held at
Dawson oa February 3rd, to name
delegates to tin; national Repub¬
lican convention to lie held in
Philadelphia on June 19th. It is
announced that the Republicans
will nominate candidates for < (ov¬
ornor um! statehou.se officers this
year.
According to the Baltimore Sun:
“The dairy business promises to
become an important industry in
Georgia. Within a lew years
many valuable herds of dairy cat¬
tle have been introduced in that
state, and the industry has devel¬
oped so rapidly that a State Dai¬
rymen’s Association lias been or¬
ganized and is giving valuable
information as to eligible loca-
lions, grasses, etc. A few days
ago two Vermont men, who have
recently disposed of about twenty
dairies in that state, arrived in
Atlanta and announced their pur¬
pose to engage in the same liue'of
business in Georgia. They are
now prospecting for an eligible
location and are well pleased with
the outlook.” The Macon Tele¬
graph says dairy businesses well
as many other important and once
practically unknown industries,
has ccmo to stay. We are fast
bocoiuing our own providers. In
almost every line production is
gradually taking the place of pur¬
chase abroad, and our industrial
future is bright with promise.
Mr. J. L. White, of Live Oak,
Fla., is reported to have recently
made the following interesting
statement to a representative of
the Washington Post: “Some
ten or twelve years ago you could
get all the yellow pine and cypress
lumber land in south Georgia and
Florida that you wanted, and get
it cheap. But now it is as scarce
as lien's teeth. Why, ten years
ago I was offered laud on the St.
John’s river, south of Palatku
about the middle of the state, at
a dollar an acre—a hundred thou¬
sand acres of it. If 1 could gel
the same quantity of land now tit
the same price, timbered as that
land was, l would make a quarter
of a million dollars on the trade.
Today there is not u stick of cy¬
press on that same track to be
bought for love or money, and t he
same thing applies all over the
state where there is any decent
timber laud to be seen. They are
cleaning up the swamps to a dis-i
tauce of two and three miles from
the nver and the creeks, and buy-
ers are out all over the state of
Florida and in the low lands of
