COMMERCIAL LATIN. {
Volapuk and Esperanto Already Dead
Languages—Wonderful Discovery.
The necessity for a universal lan
guage has now passed beyond the
realm of discussion. With the rail
roads, the high speed steamers, the
telegraph and the telephone bringing
human beings closer together every
day, it is outrageous that speech
should still continue to separte them.
Let us, therefore, unify all langaug?»s.
But what language will the trust of
mankind speak? A living language
{s not to be considered; the national
pride of too many nations would have
to be encountered. Artificial lan
guages have no prospect of success;
they are too arbitrary. Under the
plea of progress, Esperanto, which
superseded Volapuk, is already op
_posed by the “Neutral Language” and
by the “Common Tongue.”
Dr. Colombo asserts that only a
dead language has any chance of suc
cess, and that Latin is the most avail
able. To begin with, it i 3 not a lan
guage that is to be made; it is already
constituted; it is taught in all coun
tries. Ten million persons can speak
it, and, being more synthetic than
any other, it is eminently the lan
guage of the telegraph. '
But it is said that Latin is a diffi
cult language. Yes, if literary Latin
{8 meant; and that is why the periodi
cals printed in that language in Leip,
sic, in Berlin and in Rome have their
gubscribers only among the learnad;
no, if commercial Latin is meant. The
latter is as simple as amything can
be. The sailors, the soldiers, and the
merchants of Rome, taught it without
dificulty to the barbarians who dwelt
along the Seine, the Thames, the
Rhine, the Nile and the Euphrates.
Dr. Colombo declares that he has
rediscovered commercial Latin in the
ruins of Pompeii. It has no deponent
verbs; the paassive is formed in all
cases by means of the auxiliary
“sum;” it employs the shortest words;
its grammar is reduced to a minimum,
and it has no ampHibologies. This
kind of Latin is clearness itself, and
can be mastered in a few lessons by a
schoolboy.
If it should be adopted as the uni
versal language, the weary - years
wasted over it by so many mediocre
students in the higher educational in
stitutions will immediately become
time usefully employed.
Under the auspices of the Linguis
tic Union of the Cote d’Azur, Dr. Co
lombo, in furtherance of this now im
‘portant movement, has already pub
lished a ‘“Manual of Commercial
Latin.”—Courrier des Etats Unis.
A QUEER BUSINESS.
The Way Houses on Fire Were
Bought in Ancient Rome.
One of the strangest businesses in
ancient Rome is mentioned by Juvenal
in his satires. It consisted of buying
houses on fire. The speculator hur
ried to the scene, attended by slaves
carrying bags of money and others
carrying tools, judged by the chances
of salvage and made a bid to the dis
tracted house owner, who was glad to
accept anything, as a rule. The bar
gain struck in all haste, this earliest
of fire assurers set his slaves to work
and secured what he could. Some
times 2ven he put out the flames and
S 0 made a coup.
It was a business for capitalists,
but the poorest who speculated in a
small way could hardly lose if he had
presence of mind enough to grasp the
chances. Thus Cato the Elder, as
well as Crassus, laid the foundation
of his great wealth. He gradualy
collected a force of carpenters, ma
sons and such artificers—slaves, of
course—which reachad 500 men. Not
only did he buy houses on fire, but
also, enlarging upon the common prac
tice, he made a bid ior those adjoin
ing which stood in danger. His pro
posals were commonly welcome, we
learn, so helpless +were the people
and so great the peril. By this means
Crassus became the greatest owner
of house property in Rome.

DR. HARTMAN has probably done
more than any other physician to
ward popularizing a means of escape from
the fa;ciaY deformities, such as watery eyes
twisted nose, offensive breath, dry cracked
lips, due to the ravaging effects of catarrh.
He has made chronic catarrh a life-long
study. His remedy, popularly known as
Peruna, is the most famous remedy for
catarrh in existence.
Probably there is not a man or woman,
boy or girl, within the bounds of the
United States that has not heard of Pe
runa. By far the largest majority have
used Peruna.
The multitude of peoEle that have been
cured of chronic catarrh by using Peruna
can never be known.

Miss Amanda Johnson, Fairchild, Wis., writes:
“I write to tell you how much Peruna benefited me. For
a number of years I had pain in my head around my eyes,
and I thought it was because my eyes needed treatment, so I
went to an oculist and had glasses fitted to my eyes and
wore them for somme time, but felt no relief whatever. In
fact, I felt worse than before, and came to the econclusion
that the trouble was not with my eyes, but with my head
and that it must be catarrh. As so many of my friends had
used Peruna with benefit for this trouble, I thought I would
try it. I was not sorry that I did so, for in a short time I
began to improve, and in four weeks my eyes were in splen
did condition, my general health was much improved and all
the catarrh of the head was gone. I was glad to get rid of
this trouble, and am glad to endorse such a good medicine
as Peruna.”—Miss Amanda Johnson.
