As yet cigars have not reached the pinacle of esteem they hold with more civilized nations, but Japan is making grand ef forts to attain the standard of the West, and there are hopes for her. Just now the favorite smoke is a very small pipe, i Who Really Failed? It is the common impression that Mr. Sully, the sordid ‘‘cotton king'' of a year, has failed But is that quite accurate? Mr, Sully is probably still able to obtain as much nourishment as is good for him, and the prospect that he will be reduced to lodgings on a park bench appears re mote., He ‘‘gave his wife a $265,000 house at Christmas.’ He has ‘“‘strong backers, ' who ‘‘have gone to his aid and will help him out of the hole.” When he was .asked about his losses he “laughed.” ‘‘My suspension is only temporary,” he said. No, it does not seem to be Mr. Sully that has failed. But there have been failures enough nevertheless. ‘‘Orders began to pour in from every broker’s office,” say the news reports, ‘‘closing out the holdings of small traders whose margims had been wiped out by the first drop.”’ These small traders would not ‘‘laugh” if they were asked about their losses. The suspension of most of them is not “temporary.” They have no “strong' backers’’ to ‘‘help them out of the hole.” They did not have the forethought to] give $265,000 houses to their wives last Christmast. Some of them may be con fronting the alternative of the poorhouse or starvation. For the cotton king, as for other kings, defeat means checked ambition and ruf fled pride. For the humble subject on the firing line it means misery or death, —New York World. | Should the 10t} Be Unrepresented? | Itis the prevailing sentiment among lthe voters of Tee county that the pres ent status of affairs in regard to the rép resentation of the Tenth Senatorial dis trict calls for prompt action on the part of the executive comunittee in ordering an election candidate to fill the unex pired time of Dr, A. B. Duncan. Dr. Duncan, as we all know, has aban doned his residence in this county, and is now a resident of Fulton, being en gaged in the drug business. We are sorry to lose him as a citizen, Let the executive committee order an election at once, as this is a matter that deserves prompt attention. i MANY VOTERS. eOB My 4O e ‘ It should be borne in mind that the wasteful methods of planting, cultivating " A S IR i “Hhd LVESing cotton 1 many sections | of the South, the deterioration of seed and scarcity of labor are conditions that cannot be corrected in a single season or in a dozen, even—and the cotton-con suming portion of the world’s popula tion is increasing with remarkable rapid ity.
