{ Wanted to Grow Tall. '
Willi‘am Hart of Selma, Ind., a stu
dent 11)21 the divinity school at Chicago,
has en growing tall so fast, after
taking {a patent medicine for increas
ing heilght, that he fears that he will
never lpe able to stop. He has sought
an attgrney to see whether he has le
gal redress against the company that
furnishjfed him the medicine.
Hart,’ who is 20 years old, thought
that a | preacher should have a com
mandig presence. So when he saw
an advertisement telling how anybody
can grow taller by the expenditure of
a small amount he lost no time in fol
lowing |instructions.
Whenn he went to Chicago in Sep
tember, he measured five feet four
inches.! A month later he measured
five feet six inches. At five feet eight
inches he began to fear for the conse
quencest, but concluded to see if he
could not stop growing of his own ac
cord. When he found himself five feet
eleven inches in height and all his
clothing misfits, he consulted physi
cians, but they could do nothing for
him. He has had a long interview with
an attorney, who has undertaken to
compel the medicine firm to stop Hart
from growing.
“Why, at this rate I'll be eight feet
tall before I'm 21, and I'll have to stay
up nights to watch myself grow,” Hart
remarked.
The attorney is not sure that there
are grounds for a suit against the com
pany th7* furnished the medicine, but
will look over the law books for a pre
cedent.—New York Herald.

Former Secretaries of War.
There was a reunion of ex-secreta
rvies of war yesterday in a corner of
the senate chamber. Secretary Taft,
entering with his black derby hat
swinging in one hand and still clad in
his heayvy overcoat as he took a seat
on the large red sofa, was the occa
sion thereof.
Senator Lodge escorted the war sec
retary on his friendly visit to the
chamber. Soon Senator Elkins of
West Virginia, approaching, extended
a glad @fand to the former governor
of the Pllippines. Senator Elkins held
the warygtortfolio from December, 1891,
to the % )se of the Harrison adminis
tration. {{The West Virginian is migh
ty of stfiture, but Judge Taft plainly
outmeasfred him. Then Senator Proc
tor of \:3,? rmont, who has been doubt
ful that} idge Taft weighs 340 pounds,
as repoyfed, came near for a greeting.
He wag Mr. Elkins’ immediate prede
cessor ap head of the war department.
The VErmonter is tall and rather
he tvy «bt, but Judge Taft, by standing
on tiptpe, could look over his head.
“He is@nuch broader than I am, too,”
mused #Mr. Proctor, convinced that the
reports of Judge Taft’s avoirdupois
had not been exaggerated.
A little later Senator Alger, secre
tary of war during much of President
McKinléy’s administration, joined the
distinguished party.—Washington Post.
lowa Has a “Dom Pedro.”
One of the most eccentric characters
in lowa is Frank Bourner, now an in
mate of the Hardin county poor farm,
near Eldora, and known to railroad
men in the west as “Dom Pedro.”
~ For years he had roamed over the
ATnited States and gained a livelihood
b singing comic sengs, dancing and
working at odd jobs. He was born
in London, Sept. 12, 1845, and served
in the civil war in the Fourth Wiscon
sin cavalry.
He had been a resident of Big
Patch, Grant county, Wis., for several
years. He never married, and, being
of a roving disposition, went into the
gecvice. Captain Michael Misner was
at the head of his company, and in a
battle in which the Fourth Wisconsin
was engaged Bourner, with other mem
bers of the company, was taken pris
oner on the gunboat Gazelle. This
boat exploded down on the Red River
and of 160 men on board but two sur
vived, Bourner being one. After the
explosion (his mind was almost a blank
and he wés never able to obtain a dis-’
charge. T%%};fi*}ernment records show
that afterf§y accident Bourner again
enlisted, and then deserted, and has
never been able to obtain a pension.

NO APPETITE---EMAGIATED --- NERVOUS.
Many Women During the Spring Months Suffer
From Extreme Lassitude, Loss of Appetite
and Nervousness--What They Need Is
PE-RU-NA, THE CREAT TONIC
Miss Bertha M. Rush, 5435 Kincarde
street, Pittsburg, Pa., Superintendent Ju
nior Society of Methodist Protestant
church, and leading soprano of the choir,
writes: “Words cannot describe my thank
fulness to you for Peruna. I was a sufferer
from systemic catarrh for years and was in
a very much run-down condition. I was
extremely nervous, and had the most fool
ish fears over nothing. I was thin and
emaciated. .
“My physician advised me to leave this
climate, but as it was not convenient to do
so at this time, I took the advice of a
friend to use a bottle of Peruna. I took it
faithfully, and when the first bottle was
gone I {elt so much better that I boufght
six more and took them faithfully, after
which I looked like a new woman. :
“1 gained in flesh, my appetite returned
and afil my old symptoms had disappeared.
I am more than thankful to Peruna.”—
Miss Bertha M. Rush. :
| AM TIRED.
Everybody is Tired—-Spring
Weather Does It-—-Every One
Should Be Cautious.
Depression of the nervous system at the
approach of sprin(f is the cause.
geneml lassitude, dull, heavy sensations,
continual tired feeiing, with irreguiar ap
petite, and sometimes loss of sleep. Pe
runa meets every indication and proves it
self to be perfectly adapted to all their va
ried pecularities. Peruna invigorates the
system, rejuvenates the feelings, restores
the norma{ appetite and produces regular
sleep.
That tired feeling which is the natural
result of the depressing effect of warm
weather immediately after the invigorat
ing cold of winter quietly disappears when
Peruna is taken. ’Fhousands are daily tes
tifying to its priceless benefit.
Mrs. H. Kassatt, 1309 W. 13th street,
Des Moines, la., writes: “I am happy to
give my endorsement for your valuable
medicine, Peruna, as I consider it a valu
able medicine to take when the system is
run down from overwork. About two years
ago I felt that I must take a long rest, as I
bhad been unable to work for over a month
and could not regain my strength. 1 could
not sleep at night and was in a very ner
vous, high strung condition. I decig’ed to
try what Peruna would do to build up my
strength, and am pleased to say that% be
gan to improve very shortly, and in less
than two months I was able to take up
my work, and felt better than I have for
years. ] take it now twice a year, and find
that it keeps me in perfect health.” Mrs.
Kassatt was for over ten years the mana
ger of a Plant furnishing ladies’ wear and
employing hundreds of women.
Tired, Nervous Women,
There are thousands of them everywhere.
A few bottles of Peruna would do them
untold benefit. As a tonic and nerve in
vigorator it has no equal. It builds up the
nerves, it gives strength to the circulation
‘and at once restores the appetite and di
gestion. No feeble woman should be with
out Peruna.
Sweat, Itch, Blister? ROYAL FOOT WASH cures them. Removes
