Overmatched by a Woman.
The late W. W, Corcoran, the mil
lionaire philanthropist of Washington,
who gave to the city the magnificent
art gallery which bears his name, was
very fond of telling how he was once
overmatched by a wealthy maiden
lady, from whom he desired to pur
chase a piece of property.
Mr. Corcoran was the owner of the
Arlington Hotel, at the corner of Ver
mont avenue and H street. Adjoining
the hotel property on the H street side
was a handsome brownstone mansion,
owned by the maiden lady. The lot
upon which the house was built ex
tended back to I street, a distance
of four hundred feet, and abutted on
the rear of the hotel property.
Mr. Corcoran found it necessary to
enlarge the hotel, and with this end
in view desired to purchase the rear
end of the lot owned by the maiden
lady. As she was very wealthy, he
knew that a large price would not be
any special inducement, and for a
time was at a loss to know exactly
how to approach her. He finally con
ciuded to go straight to the point, and
therefore addressed her the following
note:
“Dear Miss C. How much will you
take for your back yard? We wish
to enlarge the Arlington Hotel. Yours
sincerely, <
“W. W. CORCORAN.”
Promptly came the reply:
“Dear Mr. Corcoran. How much
will you take for the Arlington Ho
tel? We wish to emnlarge our back
yard. Yours cordially. A G

One of those little incidents which
sometimes happen in everyday life
and cause a man’s funny bone to
chuckle quietly in his sleeve, occurred
the other night in one of the popular
priced theatres. The play was a
thrilling melodrama, and, with the
exception of a few seats in the boxes,
the house was packed.
Down near the stage an old man
sat, contentedly enjoying the trials of
the hero and the baseness of the bad,
.bad villain. Like lightning out of a
clear sky an usher came down'the
aisle, followed by a young man. It
appeared that the old man, who was
simply overflowing with good nature,
had taken a seat which belonged =
some one else. So the usher routed
the old man out, as the young man
held the coupon to the seat.
Both the old man and the wusher
walked up the aisle, and the old man
took a position in the lobby, leaning
against the railing back of the last
seat in the playhouse. He was told
that no standing room was allowed,
30 the only thing to do was to escort
him to one of the vacant seats in the
boxes. Now, it happened. that the
seat the old man secured was almost
iirectly over the seat in the orchestra
which he had been compelled £ re
linquish, and he smiled sweetly down
at the young man who had routed him
out.
The audience saw the incident 2ud
burst out in applause. It was fully a
minute before the performance was
allowed to proceed.—Philadelphia

Meteorites.
A total of 634 meteorites was known
up to 1903, of which there was 182
irons and only 74 stones in the west
ern hemisphere, and 299 stones and
only 79 irpns in the eastern hemis
phere. The records show only the
fall of 350 of these meteorites, dating
back to the fifteenth century. Pro
fessor Berweth, of Vienna, despite this
small number of known specimens,
calculates that 900 meteorites must
fall to the earth each year, not count
ing shooting 5a.... that disappear in
the atmosphere, and that 55 of these
at least should come under observa
tion. Professor Berweth finds that
meteorites have been chiefly recorded
in civilized countries, but that in
many instances they are more num
srous in thinly settled districts, and
that they have an especial affinity for
mountainous areas.

All these things are especially true of
those who have been suffering with ca
tarrh in any form or la gripf)e. A course
of Peruna is sure to correct all these condi
tions. It is an ideal spring medicine. Pe
runa does not irritate—it invigorates. It
does mnot temporarily stimulate — it
strengthens. It equalizes the circulation
of the blood, tranquilizes the nervous sys
tem and regulates the bodily functions.
Peruna, unlike so many spring medicines is
not simply a physic or stimulant or ner
vine. It is a natural tonic and invigorator.
If you do not receive prompt and satis
