Trolley Ferry in Missouri.
A ferry is plying across the Mis
souri river, a short distance north of
St. Joseph, which lis described as
something unique. It is not run by
wind, steam or electricity, but solely
by the force of the river’s current.
Its propristors call it a “trolley fer
ry.” A steel cable is passed across
the stream, over the boat. This cable
passes through two stationary pulleys
on the deck. By means of these pul
leys and the cable the boat is held
so that the current of the river
strikes it at an angle of about 45 de
grees, and in this “sideways” fashion
the current forces it across the chan
nel. It carries 100 tons of ecargo over
in four minutes. There are no fuel
bills to meet, no engines to keep in
repair, and no engineers to pay, and
as the boat is liberally patronized by
farmers, truck gardeners and poultry
breeders living near Wathena, on the
Kansas side of the river it is bring
ing in large dividends for its owners.
Rice for Japanese Soldiers.
Rice and dried iish is the uniforin
food of the Japanese army in cam
paigning times. This is the way in
which the rice is cooked: It is boiled
until quite thick and glutinous. Next
it is placed on a ceramic slab, rolled
out, and cut into squares. The sguarzas
are then placed in the sun to dry ani
often turned. When hard as sea bis
cuit and greatly reduced in weight,
they can be stored.
A certain number are allowed each
day to the soldier. All he has to de
is to break up a square in boiling
water and to add the dried fish. In a
few minutes he has what seems to
him a delicious thick soup. If re
cannot procure boiling watier, he sim
ply eats his rice dry. In the fruit sea
son he substitutes fruit, when he can
obtain it, for the fish.—Chicago Tri-
Ancient Egyptian Plants.
The oldest herbarium in the world
fs in the Egyptologist Mussum ut
Cairo, and consists of an inconspicu
ous coilection of dried portions of
plants. These pcrtions of plants and
flowers were taken from wreaths and
garlands in the coffins with mummies,
where they were placed by the ancient
Egyptians as death offerings, and
from edible plants which were set in
earthen vessels on the floor of the
zepulchre as the furniture of the iast
resting place of their beloved ones.
Many of these floral remains are
so well preserved that, after being
treated with warm water, they can
be handled like modern herbarium
specimens. The colors, too, are pre
served in a remarkable way. The
most important maiter in connection
with these plants is their age.
Fozd of the Chinese,
“The food of the Chinese consists
principally of rice and fish.” That
statement has appeared in nearly
every. school -geography or history
that has been published since the
flood. “It's all folderol and flap
doodle,” says a concessionaire from
the interior cf the great empire. “The
streams were fished out ages ago, and
vou seldom find fish in the interior.
On the coast yes. Much fish is eaten.
But the main food of the Chinese is
pork and chickens. Mutton and bect
are rare. Less rice is eaten than yon
would imagine, but there is an abun
dance of palatable vesgetables, and
you find no difficulty in making out
a good dinner.”
Men Will Not Have the Colored Liven
ing Dress.
Try as they may, the lovers &l the
aesthetic in men’s wear cannoct pop:-
larize colored evening dress. Gallant
ry or economy or both cause the hu
man male to hang on to the conven
tional black. It is not unlikely that
such will not be the case a hundred
yvears from now.—Sartorial Art Jour.

Catarrh of the Stomach is Generally
Called Dyspepsia--Something
to Produce Artificial Diges
tion is Generally Taken.
Hence, Pepsin, Pancreatin and a Host
of Other Digestive Remedies
Has Been Invented.
These Remedies Do Not Reach the
Seat of the Difficulty, Which
is Really Catarrh,
FX. U. 8. Senator M. C. Butler from
Y South Carolina was Senator from that
State for two terms. In a recent letter to
The Peruna Medicine Co., from Washing
ton, D. C,, says:
“1 can recommend Peruna jordys
‘pez;sia and stomach troudble, I have
been using your medicine for a short
period and I feel verymuchrelieved,
It is indeed a wonderful medicire
besides a good tonie.’’--M. C. Butler,
The only rational way to cure dyspepsia
is to remove the catarrh. Peruna cures
catarrh. Peruna does not produce* arti
ficial digestion. It cures catarrh and
leaves the stomach to perform digestion
in a natural way. This is vastly better
‘and safer than resorting to artificial meth
ods or narcotics.
Peruna has cured more cases of dyspep
sia than all other remedies combined,
simply because it cures catarrn vherever
located. If catarrh is iocated in the head,
Peruna cures it. If catarrh has fastened it
self in the throat or bronchial tubes,
Peruna cures it. When catarrh becomes
’settled in the stomach, Peruna cures it,
as well in this location as in any other.
l Peruna is not simply a remedy for
dyspepsia. Perunia is a catarrh remedy.
Peruna cures dyspepsia because it is gen
erally dependent upon catarrh. :
