Suspiclous, Treacherous Flanther.
Of all the big, dangerous cats, nbne
is more unapproachable and more
treacherous than the black panther.
Hailing from the heart of the deepest
African . jungle, lithe and supple of
body, alert and nervous, this stealthy
marauder exceeds in ferocity even a
Bengal tiger. He is the only big feline
that the lion tamer does not venture
to train; and he is the only cat so
absolutely distrustful that he shuns
even the light of day. Often he will
lie all day long in a dusky corner
of his cage, his yellow' slit eyes shift
ing and gleaming restlessly. ;
¢ Even the feeding hour ,when pan
demonium breaks loose among the big
cages, when hungry roars and squeals
mingle with impatient snarls and im
pacts of heavy bodies against steel
bars, is apt to have not effect on him.
He may lie eyeing his chunk of raw
beef suspiciously, and not venture
forth until day has waned and the
Jast visitor has left, to tear meat
from bones with his long, white fangs.
&n fact, so ugly and vicious is this
beast that fréquently he turns on his
own kind, and in many instances it is
impossible to cage him, even with a
mate.—McClure’s Magazine.
The Russian Scldier.
The Russian soldier is a very fine
fellow. In the majority of cases he
has lived a life of severest simplicity
anc hardship, and ordinary campaigu
ing when contrasted to his life at
home does not mean privation. The
¢istinguished trait of the Russian
peasant is his good nature, and this
quality stands him in good stead ip
the field. He will fight and march and
make roads all day long, and when
night comes if the commisary train
.has gone astray he will make a soup
of herbs of the field, drink the hor
rible mess, sing hymns and folk-songs
for an hour or two and go to bed
happy; what would be the hardships
of the campaign to most European
soldiers is but fun for him. In addi
tion to his soldierly qudlities, he has
cne that cannot be over-valued. He
is a stayer. He has the stolid, pa
tient, enduring, long suffering, fata:-
istic courage that comes from his de
scent, his early surroundings, his re
ligion and his beliefs.—Major Creigh
*on Webb, in the Metropolitan.
* The Walking Locomctive.
This curious machine is attracting
much attention in England, aad Pro
fessor Hele-Shaw of the Liverpool Uni
versity recently made it the subject
of a lecture. The inventor calls it the
“pedrail.” Professor Hele-Shaw re
gards it as successfully solving the
problem of adapting the intermittent
movements of an animal in walking
to the continuous movement of a
wheel. The mechanism is too compli
cated to be described in a few sen
tences, but the principle of its action
is that the wheels of an ordinary trac
tion engine are replaced by revolving
frames carryving spokes, which termi
nate in circular feet, or pedals, and
bear small rollers, over which, as the
pedals advance, runs a rail supporting
the body of the engine. The machine
is said to step somewhat like an ele

The Police Reporter.
In two or three dingy little offices
opposite Police Headquarters in Mul
berry street, New York city, men sit
night and day collecting the polica
news of the city for the newspapers.
Sooner or later every incident in the
city’s life in which a policeman is
concerned reaches headquarters by
bulletin or formal report and comes
under the attention of the police re
poriers. A similar group has heen
there getting the news since before
the elevated railroad existed and the
trolley cars began to run; and at some
time in his career almost every news
paper man in town has been a mem
ber of one of these groups sifting the
human interest out of the mass of
incidents reported over the police
wires.
. A very old timer not so long ago,
amused himself in an idle minute by
jotting down for the benefit of the
newer generation a list of men who
had served their term as police report
ers and afterward had attained fame
in newspaper work and out of it.
It was a long list and it included al
most every news writer .of past and
present reputation in this city.
One of the earliest names on the
list was that of Sir Henry M. Stanley,
who died in London a few days ago,
and one of the latest was Jacob A.
Riis.—New York Sun.

A Good Reply.
One of our readers sends us an
amusing story of a borrowing family.
The other day one of its members
went to a neighbor’s house and asked
for the loan of a washtub, and the
answer she received was rather per
plexing. It was as follows: “No, 1
can’t: the hoops are all off; the bot
tom is out, and it's full of water.”

Suggestions by Dr, Hartman---How
to Combat the Nervous Depressien
Incident to Warm Weather.
Nervousness is very common among
women. This conditjon is due to anaemi¢
nerve centers. The nerve centers are
‘the reservoir for nerve vitality. These
centers become bloodless for the want of
proper nutrition.
This condition is especiall¥‘ noticeable
during the warm season. Kvery sum
mer an army of invalids are produced as
a direct result of weak nervous systems.
This could easily be overcome by the
use of Yeruna. Peruna strikes at the
root of the trouble by correcting. the
digestion. Perfect digestion furnishes in
creased nutrition for the nerve centres,
Perfectly digested food gives these reser
voirs of life a vitality which creates strong,
steady nerves, and in this maaner fortilies
and nourishes life. :
Miss Blanche Grey, a prominent young
society woman of Memp‘nis, Tenn., in a
recent letter from- 174 Alabama street,
writes: “To a society woman whose ner
vous force is often taxed to the utmeost
from lack of rest and irregular meals,
1 know of nothing which isof so much
benefit as Peruna., 1 took it a few
months ago when I felt my strength giv
ing way, and it soon made itseij man
ifest in giving me new strength and
health.”’=--Miss Blanche Grey.
Pe-ru-na Containg No Nareotics.
"~ One reason why Peruna has found per
manent use in so many homes is that it
contains no narcotic of any kind. Peruna
is perfectly harmless. It can be used any
length of time without acquiring a drug
habit. Peruna does not profluce temporary
results. It is permanent in its effect,
It has no bad effect upon the system,
and gradually €¢liminates catarrh by re
moving the cause of catarrh. There are a
multitude of homes where Peruna has been
used off and on for twenty years. Such a
thing could not be possible if Peruna con
tained any drugs of a narcotic nature.
At this season of the year -we are pe
culiarly liable to inflammations of the
stomach and bowels. 1t is the part of wis
dom to learn how to treat them short and
in the easiest and quickest manner. Pe
runa does this by its peculiar power over
all forms of catarrhal troubles.
