3 To Steady Steamships. ‘
To lessen the rolling of steamslips
in a sea an interesting device has
been designed by Herr Otto Schlick,
a German naval architect, and con
sists of installing a rapidly rotating
fly wheel in the hold of the vessel.
This involves making use of the prin
ciple of the gyroscope familiar in the
toy sometimes known as the Archime
dean tcp, where a fly: wheel whoge
weight is concentrated near its cir
cumference is mounted in gimbals
eo that it is free to rotate in any
jplane. Herr Schlick proposes to
imount a fly wheel carried on a ver
itical axis in a frame which is sus
'pended on a horizontal axis trans
verse to the length of the vessel, the
whole mechanism being placed at the
bottom of the boat. To rotate the
fly wheel with the necessary high
apeed, electric motors or steam tur
bines would be employed. There
would be hydraulic brakes and band
brakes to restrain and regulate the
motion of the fly wheel when neces
sary. The effect of the rapidly rotat
ing fly wheel is to develop forces that
would oppose the osciliation of the
vessel, making it slower and reducing
its extent materially. An elaborate
calculation was made of the size and
weights of such fly wheel, and Herr
Schlick has ascertained that for a
steamer of 6,000 methic tons (5,905.5
English tons) a fly wheel four metres
(15.12 fest) in diameter, weighing
ten métric tons (9,842 English tons)
and moving with a peripheral velocity
to 200 metres (656 feet) per second
would have a mgst marked effect.—

Odd Missouri Facts. ,
~ That the highest point in Missouri
fs but 1,800 feet above the level of
the sea is one of the many interest
ing topographical facts discovered by
those who examine the large relief
map of that State in the Model Li
brary in the Missouri State Building
at the World’s Fair.
This “mountain” is iron, known by
-the residents of the county as Tom
suck, and from its point radiate the
different geological formations of the
Central Mississippi Valley.
Another interesting disclosure is
the evident route traversed by ‘the
Missouri River in past geological
ages. In the north central part of the
State the Missouri’s present course
‘deviates from the northeast to the
southeast. By the map can be seem
the loglcal continuation of its course
from the western border of the State
to a point between where Hannibal
and the lowa State line are now situ
ated, which geologists declare was
the original confluence of the Mis
-souri anl Mississippi Rivers. The re
lief map slso shows that Missouri has
lands telow the river level.
THE CHAFIMG DISH CABINET.
The chafing dish now has a cabinet
all to itself. It is a pretty little
straight legged affair, in three stories.
Part of the lower story is mcupied by
a cabinet, with a tile inserted in the
door by way of decoration. The sec
ond story, on which the chafing dish
i{s supposed to stand, has a copper
plate inserted in the centre for the
dish, and underneath the. whole runs
a shallow drawer. The third or top
story is simply two little side pieces
or brackets somewhat reminiscent of
the wings that used to spring from the
sides of the old fashioned ‘‘what not”
—peace to its ashes!

‘Miss Hapgood tells how she was cured
of Fallopian and Ovarian Inflammation—
and escaped an awful operation by using
¢ ’ 5
Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound.
“Dear Mrs. Pingmranm:—ll suffered for four years with what the
doctors called Salpingitis (inflammation of the fallopian tubes) and ova
ritis, which are most d&'stressmg and painful ailments, affecting all the
surrounding parts, undermining the constttution, and sgppmg the life
forces. If you had seen mea year ago, before I began taking Lydia E.
Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, and had noticed the sunken eyes
sallow complexion, and general emaciated condition, and compared that
person with me as I am today, robust, hearty and well, you would not
wonder that I feel thankful to {ou and your wonderful medicine,
which restored me to new life and health in five months, and saved me
from an awful operation.” — Miss IReExe Hareoop, 1022 Sandwich St.,
Windsor, Ont. ;
Ovaritis or inflammatisn of the ovaries or fallopian tubes which adgoin the
ovaries may result from sudden stopping of the monthly flow, from inflamma
tion of the womb, and many other causes. The slightest indication of trouble
with the ovaries, indicated by dull throbbing pain in the side, aceompanied
by heat and shooting Fains, should claim your instant attention. It w?ll not
cure itself, and a hospital operation, with all its terrors, may easily result from
neglect.
“DeAr Mrs. Pingrax;—X can truly say that you have saved
my life, and I cannot express my gratitude to {ou in words.
“Bafore I wrote to you telling how I felt, I had doctored for over
two years steady and spent lots of money in medicine besides, but it all
failed to do me any good. M§ menses did not appear in that time, and
