Conditions Around Lees
burg.
Conditions around this metropolis
have changed greatly in the last few
vears. Lands have gone soaring sky
ward-Rents bave nearly doubled---
Where ¢ few years ago a bale to the
plow was the rule. many now rent for
two bales and some for three bales.
This leads to the speculation what
the future holds in store. °First
as land rent is based on acreage and
Jand vulues. Tennants can not afford
to pursue the old time ruts in farming
fifty acres half worked.
It will mean a cutting down of the
acreage and better culture, can mean
noshing else. The shiftless farmer
renting fifty acres can not afford. to
complete with the one who makes
more on thirty acres. He cant afford
to pay double rent double bills for la
bor and thes cdme out whole footed
in the end.
It will mean a large increase in fer
tilizers, not neccessarily commercid but
more home raised fertilizers, a saving
of seed for maturing and the raising of
more in the lot.
Besides-A bale of cotton raised on
land thab will make a bale to the acre
will always sell for more pound for
pound than one ré,iSbQ on land that
takes five acres to make g bale. Why
pecause the rich land‘kefps the cotton

green, the plant matures fvlly and is
stained by rust and discolored by yel
low balf rotten seed. Take it when
you will and you will find that the dif
ference in staple will inake a neat sum
on a five horse farm to say nothing of
increased yield,
All thingsgpoint to farms of smaller
acreage among renters, A better cul
tivaced county and consequently a more
prosperous one, :
The day of the scratching of fifty
acres with a sorry mule are over, The
day of practical farming of acres is
coming fast, The day of high rents
