SCANDAL IN ALASKA,
A .
Partisan Appointment of Judges Re
. snlts 'qu‘nutroufly.
~ The great inventor, Thomas A. Edl
gon, charges there are gross irregulari
tles in the patent office which involve
the commissioner of patents, Frederick
1. Allen, Mr. Edison appears to have
been turned down on a patent covering
his new storage battery and appealed
to President Roosevelt to have his
rights protected, who ordered that a
new hearing be granted.
The scandal grew out of matters re
lating to lilison’s new elfctric storage
battery. While certain patents on this
were pending an examiner in the ofiice
is alleged to have allowed another in
vontor to withdraw and amend specifi
cations on a patent along the same
lines as Kdison’s. Tle latter’s attor
ney heard of the circumstance, and in
vestigntion showed that the amend
ment to the specifications for the rival
patent embodied certain features of the
Edison patent,
The gction of the examiner was ip
gross violation of the rules of the ofr
fice, and Edison, through his attorney,
filed a protest and demanded a hearing
before the commissioner with a view to
the eancellation of the amendments
which had been allowed to be made to
the rival patent. This is the hearing
Commissioner Allen refused to grant.
Such gratve charges would seem to
demand instant investigation, but so
far nothing has been published to
show that steps have been taken to
protect the inventing public. Nearly
every department of the government
has been smirched with scandals that
are being covered up by the Republic
ans for fear of their etfect upon the
voters at the coming election.

A Surprise For Worleera,
T'hose people who are wage earners
will be glad to know that their salaries
have been increased at an astonishing
rate the past few years, for Secretary
‘Shaw says the figures are being pre
pared by the highest authority to prove
lf‘; also that the increased cost of liv
ing has merely kept pace with the
wages. That will be quite a surprise
to those who are finding it difficult to
make both ends meet.
