NATURAL BRIDGES.
Two Theories in Regard to Thelr
: ' Formation.
It is commonly believed, says the
Geographical Record, that natural
bridges, of which the Natural Bridge
of Virginla is the best known Am
erican example, are due to the falling
in of cavern roofs, leaving only a
part to span the stream which the
destruction of the cavern has brought
to the surface.
By a study of the North Adams
Natural Bridge, Professor Cleland
has been led to the conclusion that
in this case at least the origin is
quite different. In this case the bridge
secems to be due to the solution of
the limestone along a joint plane near
the former course of Hudson Brook.
At first only a small amount of water
seeped along the joint plane but after
awhile, it made a channel large
enough to divert the entire brook un
der the surface, giving rise to the
bridge.
Walcott had previously offered a
similar theory for the Natural Bridge
of Virginia, and Cleland concludes
that while the falling in of cavern
roofs may occasionally give rise to
natural bridges the most common
cause for such bridges in marble,
limestone, sandstone and lava is that
outlined above.

Open Hearth Versus Bessemer.
The wood-made freight car is pass
mg, and the locomotive seems to be
headed towards the junk pile in this
electric age. Even the Bessemer steel
rail, solid as it is, is to be supplanted
by its cousin of open hearth origin.
In 1905 the production of open
hearth steel was carried to 8,971,378
tons, a gain of 51.8 per cent in a sin
gle year. The output of Bessemer
steel in that year was but 10,941,375
tons. A like gain in the production
of open hearth steel in the present.
year would be apt to carry it close
up to that of its rival and possibly
it might take first place. !
In the year 1889 but 374,543 tons of
open-hearth steel were made. in the
United States, and each year since
that time has made a new record. The
making of open hearth steel has not
shown a decrease in a single year
since 1889. Its march forward has '
been steady and persistent, and today |
it stands a stout rival of Bessemer,!
and the indications are that its name ;
will soon stand at the head of the!
column. The deecision of the Penn
sylvania railroad in favor of openl
hearth rails will certainly give the
final leadership to Bessemer’s great
and only rival.—Birmingham Age Her- |

BOY'S TERRIBLE ECZEMA.
Mbuth and Eyes Covered With Crusts—
Hands Pinned Down--Mirac
‘ulous Cure by Cuticura,
“When my little boy was si= months
old he Lad eczema. ‘L'he sores extended
so quickly over the whole body that we at
once called in the doctor. We then went
to another doctor, but he couid not belp
him, and in our despair we went to a
third one. Matters became so bad that
he had reguiar holes in his cheeks, large
enouzh to put a finger into. The food
bad to be given with a spoon, for his
mouth was covered with crusts as thick
as a finger, and whenever he opened the
mouth they began to bleed and suppurate,
as did also his eyes. Hands, arms, chest
and back, in short, the whole body, was
covered over and over. We had no rest
by day or night. Whenever he was laid
in his bed we had to pin his bancs down,
otherwise he would scratch his face, and
make an open sore. | think his face must
have itched most fearfully.
“We finally thougnt nothing couid help,
apd 1 had made up my mind to send my
wife with .he clild to Karope, hoping that

They do not realize that the back is
the mainspring of woman's organism,
and quickly indicates by aching a dis

Lydis E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com

one and only effective remedy in such
cases. It speedily cures female and
kidney disorders and restores the fe
