FOND OF THE GIRLS.
The Love Affairs of the Father of i
c“-"’-
George Washington's love affairs he
g2n at a very early age, and he was to
the day of his death “fond of the girls.”
The first sweetheart was one Mary
Bland, with whom he fell in love when
be was ounly 14 years of age. This is
sascertained from an entry in one of his
diaries, where he refers to her s bis
*lowlznd beauty.” Having tired of
Mary, he wrote to & friend that he had
decided to “bury lLis chaste and troe
blesome passion,” which, having doue.
he soom found bimscl enamored of
Eany Cary, a sister-in-law of Colonu}
Fairfax. His affection for this young
lady lasted for some years, being only
Interrupted now and again by his nat
ural Virginia passion of making love
to every pretty girl whom he met.
In 1752 bils first sericus love affair
was shattered. Having fallen in love
with a certain Miss Betsy Fauntleroy,
he determined to nsk her to become his
wife, but the fates had destined him
to marry another, for she rejected his
proposals. He afterward eame back
to her, but found that she had not
changesdt ber mind on that score.
His next heartache was caused by a
girl in New York after he had become
a colonel. Sfhe was the heiress Mary
Phillipse. lils buslbness ecalied ain
away from her; but, having finished
this, he returned to New Yeork and pro
posed to her, but was here, aa before,
disappointed by her refusal.
In 1758 at Waynes Ferry, whil
traveling to Williamsburg with dis
patches, he met his future wife, Mrs
Martha Dandridge Custis, the widow
of Daniel Park Custis. We learn from
bistory that she was young, pretty, in
telligent and rich. He had been with
her all of an afterncon and was teo ride
away to his home the next morning.
On his way he stopped at her home
and then and there told of his love and
asked her to become his mate for life.
This time, eontrary to his previous
proposals, he was accepted.—Chiecsigjo

There is a disposition in some quar
ters to critieise Mr. Roosevelt for the
active interest he is displaying in his
own campaign and for his zeal in pro- 1
moting his political fortunes. This crit
felsm began when the recess session of
the Fifty-eighth congress was brought
to a rather abrupt close. It was then
intimated that congress adjourned not
%0 much of its ewn volition as at the re
quest of the president, whe had urgent
reasons of a political nature for desir
ing the statesmen te go home at the
earliest possible opportunity. It is ap- |
parent that Mr. Rooseveit, like some of ‘
his predecessors, considers it no viola-|
tion of the proprieties and in no way |
unhecoming his exalted position to take |
a hand in the management of the cou-‘
test which means either his retirementl
to private life or 'his election by the
majority of his fellow citizens to the
highest office in the gift of the nation.

Need Not Harm the Trusts Now.
It will be a nice thing for Mr. Knox
to be transferred from the department |
of justice to the United States senate, '
As attorney general his feelings must
have been lacerated at the times when
he felt it his duty to stick pins in thel
big combines—to draw blood from the
beef trust and the Northern Securities
company. In the senate he will not be
called upon to be cruel to the trusts.
He will not have to bring them into
court and denounce them as public en
emies. When he becomes senator he
can regard the combines either withi
friendly indifference or as necessary
developments of our modern industrial
gystem. At any rate, if he continues to |
hate them It will not be incumbent
upon him to harm them.—Baltimore
