Why Did He Propose?
“pDid you hear about Flossie being
engaged?’ agks the first fair young
thing.
“No. Is it true?” i
“Yes, and it's the most romantic
thing you ever heard of. You know
Egbert Tigsmore has been paying at

I‘Yes.’}
“Well, yesterday morning Flossie
was helping her mother clean house, |
and she had on an old skirt that she |
has tried to give to every cook they fi

big balloon sleeves, you know—" {
‘“Yes, yes.” 1
“And her hair was all draggling
down into her eyes; and she had been |

them, and there were smears of dirt |

hands were in horrible great big {
gloves; and she was wearing an old
pair of carpet slippers that belonged ‘
to her father—and of all things!” |
“Yes, yes. What then?” |
“Eghert proposed to her, while she
was looking like that.” T
“He did?” ;
“He did, and of course she accepted
him.”
“Well, a man who is so deeply ip
love that he will propose to a girl
when she looks that way deserves to
be accepted.”
“Yes, but Egbert proposed over the
telephone.”—Omaha Bee.

How the Burro Eats Thistles,
The Rocky Mountain burro, one of
the most sagacious of animals, seeks
the thiztle as a favorite food, and the
pungent spines with which it pro
tects its leaves at every angle are
dcabtless a recognition on its part of
this fondness of grazing animals for
it. Few experiences of frontier life
are more amusing than to watch the
donkey’s attack upon a large bull
thistle. He walks about it, seeking
for a favorite opening, projects his
lips gingerly against its spines and
jerks back as he feels its pricks. He
surveys it pensively for a moment or
two and then slowly raises his foot
and strikes it, pausing to watch the
effect of the blow. He then perhaps
strikes at it from the other side and
watches again. The blows become
rapid, and at length it is broken down
and thoroughly trampled, after which
it is consumed to the last vestige.—

The Happiest Children.
The happiest children are those who
have happy mothers. The young life
which grows up in the shadow of a
discontented, repining and gloomy
mother is like a plant unwatered by
kindly dews. It is apt to be dwarfed
and stunted. Even when things are
crooked and temptations to be harsh
come, let the mother, for her sons’
and daughters’ sake, try to be happy.
