~ WHAT ABOUT IT?
——— —— -
MR. MERCHANT:
What about that advertisenient of yours for next issue?
The busy season is upon us and you’d better make hay
while the sun shines, for when the rain comesit will prove
too late. Business cannot be had when there is no busi
ness, nor can you afford to wait for people-to hunt you up
and give you business while your neighbor over the way 18
going into their homes, through print, and telling them
what he has, offering them inducements in prices and
inviting and urging them to come in and see and buy.
This paper goes into more homes in this county than
any other publication. We want your business, we appre
ciate it, and to exist and fight for a better town, community
and county, must haye it. Also, you needit to make a
beiter success.
Think the matter over and try it out. Remember
what made big.corporations of small beginnings—printer’s
ink, and help us in helping yourself. -
PUT M. L. JGHNSON, FARMER
ON RAILROAD COMMISSION
Successful farmer and business man,
and one of long legislative experience,
Mack L. Johngon, of Bartow, asks the
support of Georgia voters for state
railroad commissioner, in place of Mr.
Candler \yho is not a cendidate. ‘
Ho stands for a square deal for every
person and every interest in Georgia,
and for full control of rates within
the state, by its own commigsion. j
Bartow County’s commissioners
unanimously commended his splendid
service to agriculture and the com
mon schools. He fought through, after
four years of hard effort, the law ex
empting farm products from taxation
for one year, while in the producer’s
hands; and -his successful efforts for
the common schools are matters of‘
Georgia history. He has been devoted
and untiring in his work for Georgia’s,

giving $4OO a year for all time to come,

Railroad Commissioner Boifeuillet
recently wrote of him: ‘“He has splen
didly represented his immediate con
stituents in the House of Representa~
tives for many years, admirably served
the whole state of Georgia, and has
been particularly zealous in watching
after the farming interests of the com

Walter R. McDonald Candidate
For Railroad Commission
Walter R. McDonald, the blind legis
lator from Richmond county, is a can
dldate for the Railroad Commission of
Georgia to succeed Hon. C. Murphy
Candler, who is not offering for re
election.
At the age of thirteen, a poor boy
on his father’s small fafm in Richmond
County, near Augusta, the youngest of
geven children, he was suddenly strick
en with total blindness. Realizing that
the light of day had bheen i‘orever‘
barred from his vision, the young farm- |
er boy set out to win an education
and with a determination to serve his
state in spite of his handicap of blind
ness. Having advanced only to the
fourth grade in common school, and
knowing that his family was unable to
give him an education, he set to work
and, by his own effort, working during
school terms and vacation, earned andi
paid for his education, graduating from |
the University of Georgia in 1914.
Since that time he has successtullyl
practiced law in the City of Augusta,
where he 18 considered one of the
ablest of the younger lawyers of that(
section, McDonald is now in his early
thirties. ;
Mr. McDonald is a man whose cheer
fulness is en inspiration to his friends,
of whom there are thousands. As an
evidence of his popularity and ability
the voters of Richmond County have
for three successive terms sent him to
the State Legislature over opposition.

School Again in Session
The Leesburg High School
is again in session, having opened
;on last Morday morning with the
‘promise of the best session that
}thus far, we have enjoyed.
‘ The attendance is large with
some other pupils yet to enter,
the faculty is complete witha
splendid corps of teachers and
parents of pupils and friends of
‘the school manifest that interest
‘and co-operation that signifies
}educational advancement for our
boys and girls.
' Quite a nice program was
rendered on the opening morning
\consisting of song, Bible reading,
prayer and -addresses and the
earnestness of those thus con
tributing to the exercises was
but another assurance that our
people are just as they should
be—looking upon the educational
institutions as the greatest factor
in building and maintaining a
better community. :
The most of our schools are
consolidated and aceredited High
‘School and which eyery citizen is
very proud’ Our buildings are
all very modern and up-to-date,
two last year being built ata
cost of $125,000. Lee county isi
one of the two counties farther‘
advanced 'than any others in the
consolidated School system which
we think is the best system any
county can have,
Let us be as proud of our school
as we should be. Let no one
throw an.iota of hindrance in the
way of the efforts of teachers,
pupils or school -officials that
would mar a pleasant and profit
able term. Our school should he
our pride since it is here that our
children are to receive the rudi
ments of an education that shall
make their lives more prosperous
and pleasant.
I CARD OF THANKS
I take this method of thanking
the good people of Leesburg, Daw
son and Sasser for their kindness
and sympathy shown me during the
gickness and death of my dear wife.
I wish to especially thank Drs,
Statham and Cranford for their
faithful service. -
Sincere gratitude is felt for the
many beautiful floral offerings and
the sweet consolation received From
sympathetic and loving hearts,

South Georgia Backs
Bell For Judgeship
Judge R. C. Bell, of Cairo, who
was sworn in about three weeks
ago as a member of the Geocgia
Court of Appeals, to fill the un
expired term of Judge Ben Hill,
deceased, has discovered the
proverbial statement *‘that a pro
phet is not without horor save
in his own country’’ is not at all
applicable in his case. His friends -
and the whole of South Georgia
is now calling itself his friend—
have pulled off their coats and
rolled up their sleeves to relect
him to the appellate judgeship
for just as long as he cares to sit
upon the-bench, It was in de
ference to the wishes of many
South Georgians that Judge Bell
consented to become a candidate
in the September primary. :
Of the five judges on the ap
pelate { court only one—Judge
Luke—is from South Georgia.
South Georgians think Judge Bell
should stay. '
New Church
Building to Start
in Leeshurg Soon
“We are informed that the new
Baptist church which the good
people of Leesburg have been
working so hard to get started is
practically assured and the work
on the building will shortly begin.
The new building will be located
on the same ground as the old
'one, but will be put back about
’2O geet from the sidewalk and
will be built of brick. :
Practically all the money for
for the building is now ready and
the work is to start about Octo
ber Ist.
[.eesburg has about $125,000 in
Public Buildings all new and
modern in every respect but it
seems that our churches are not
up to the standard for a progres
sive town and and the citizens
haye realized this and gone to
work in earnest.
Our Court house is one of the
best in the state, our School
Building connot be equalled, then
why shonld our churches not be
up to the standard with our other
public bu ildings—it is up to the
people to do this now.
