Department Warns
Cotton Planters of
Fake Weevil
“Remedies”
The present great interest in
the boll weevil problems in the
Southeastern States has resulted
in a large number of patented
preparations and machines which
are being vigorously exploited,
says the United States Depart
ment’ of Agriculture. Thisis a
repitition of what has occurrea
in every region invaded by the
boll weevil. During the firat few
years the farmers are exploitedl
and many useless or practically
useless devises are sold to them.‘
In a few years, however, history
shows that such organizations go{
out of business. Their operations'
are especially important at the;
present 'time since the losses |
caused by the boll weevil will be
increased by the expense of buy
ing nostsums of various kinds.
‘The claims for these prepara
tions are not based on scientific
tests although in many cases the
persons exploiting them are un
doubtedly sincere in their belief
that they will yield good resuits.
To determine whether a remedy
is -effective, it is necessary to
haye control areas and to consid
er the effects of numerous cul
tural practices. It is very easy
for an untrained observer to
attribute to some preparation he
has applied, the beneficial results
of some variation in climatic or
cultural factors.
The Department of Agriculture
and many of the State experi
ment stations haye tested the
new boll weevil remedies which
have been proposed from year to
year and many of those now be
ing offered the public are not es
sentially different from the kind
that haye been tested and dis
carded.
The Association of Southern
Agricultural Workersatits recent
convention at Memphis consider
ed the whole problem of boll
weeyil control and, inaddition to
certain cultural methods, it rec
ommended the con. ideration of
three remedies. ‘

method in -areas where the yield
of cotton i 3 high enough to war
rant the expense. It also endor
sed the Florida method for the
region in which it has proven to
be applicable, and further recom
mended extensive tests of this
method in other regions of light
yields.
In another paragraph it called
attention to the fact that the
molasses arsenate treatment, al
though not yet subjected to suf
ficiently detailed experimental
tests to warrant its endorsement,
kad apparently given results over
a wide area that warranted fur
ther consideration, and it there
fore recommended thorough and
immediate tests of this method
by State and Federal agencies.
The State and Government in
stitations are anxious to help the
farmers through the agency of
any new methods of controlling
the boll weevil which may be dis
covered. As promptly as possible
careful tests are conducted. The
department strongly recommends
that farmers exercise due caution
in spending money for new boll
weevil remedies. In all cases
farmers should demand evidence
of official tests and communicate
with their experiment stations
for detailed information regard
ing any of the new remedies. If
anything. of value is discovered
by the State experiment stations
or by the Federal Department,
prompt and widespread notice of
the fact will be given the public.
In the meantime if is safe to say
that in all probability any money
spent for patented mixtures or
machines will be wasted. _

Ship Coming In?
Is Your Ship Coming In?
You often hear people say they are ¥oing to do
““thus and so’’ when their ship comes in. Did you ever
stop to think that your ship will never come in until you
send one out.
You must build your ship in this world by industry
and thrift, and it is not so hard after you once begin
and get the habit,
Which would you rather hear people:say of you:
“‘yonder goes John Smith, who struck it lucky on a deal
and cleaned up a pile,”’ or ‘‘yonder goes John Smith, the
man of means, judgment and influence, who has made
money by keeping steaaily at it and by saving what he
has made—a man who does things?”’
What you would term a ‘‘lucky streak’’ only comes
to one in a thousand, while we can all kecome indepen
dent if we go about it in the right manner. :
Let us help you on the way to independence. We
feel an interest in you, and this part of the country.
You are a part of the country, are you going to do your
part? 2>

tion. Two special features of
the State Conventions will be the
emphasis laid on Sunday School
work for the one-room church,
and the Daily Vacation Bible
School. The program will be un
excelled in its list of out-of-state
speakers, as well as Georgia’s
best workers. An outstanding
music leader, C. Harold Lowden,
of Philadelphia, has been secured,
and in every respect these con
‘ventions will measure up to those
of preceding years.
