FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1923.
The man who is listening all the
morning for the call of the dinner
bell, does not usually listen very
often to the change rattling in his
pocket.
Ll i e
‘Trouble with a lot of country
stores is that they don’t advertise
enough so that their home folks rea
lize what good service and reason
albe prices they give.
L e
When the farmer asks as much
for a 12 and 14 hour day as the
city man wants for his eight hour
day with Saturday afternoons off,
they call him a bolshevist.
PROTECTING THE BIRDS
Insect pests are one great ob
stacle to raising food crops, and
they will continue so until this
country manages to restore the
same amount of bird life that was
in existence years ago. It should be
made a very serious offence in every
state to kill an insect eating bird.
It seems a strange state of things
when pot hunters are allowed to
go out and kill birds that are needed
to keep down bugs that prey on
crops. The game bag of birds will
make a few pies for the sporty
crowd in the cities, but those birds
if kept alive, would kill the bugs
that are preying on a whole field of
crops.
B e
REMEDYING SOCIAL EVILS
While sudden and sweeping
changes in human society would
create infinite misery, yet most of
the evils from which the country
suffer could be removed if the peo
ple would only take wise steps to ac
complish social reforms.
Of course things will never go
wholly right so long as so many
people are grasping and selfish. But
the more serious evils that perplex
the country are due to the mis
takes of the people as a whole.
Many of the troubles from which
the country suffers are due to the
errors of government. If the peo
ple would eilect wise and competent
officials, they could right the most
serious wrongs.
As it is now, a great many men
get into office who are willing to
consider only what seems to be the
immediate desire of their constitu
ents. A man will go to Congress
and vote for some benefit for his
own district, when he should know |
that that policy wuold be harmful
to the country at large. Or he will’
vote to please some grasping ele
ment, and perpetuate some wrong,
to please some organized group
among his constituents.
If the people were thoroughly
wise and intelligent, they would
throw such a man out of office so
quick that it would make a politi
cian's hair stand on end. The re
sult would be that our politicians
would consider the good of the
whole people, instead of playing for
special interests. !
The time is never likely to come
in our day, when all the people will
have the higher education. And not
all who have had all that schools
and colleges can teach can be de
pended upon to vote wisely. But
it would help a lot if people would
do more newspaper reading, taking
pains to read both sides of public
questions. If everybody would read
and think on such themes, it would
not be so easy for selfish and shal
low politicians to get into positions
of influence.

THE GREATEST ASSET
The remark is often made that
the boys and girls of a community
are its greatest asset. Yet though
people may assent o this proposition
theorctieally, yet often is practical
life they ignore it altogethcr,
In the matter of schools or play
grounds, for instance, they will oft
en haggle about some gum of moncy
that will place no large burden on
the tax rate, but which is really
‘necc,:siy for the proper training of
the young people,
It is not right in these times to
support any measure calling for ex
travagant use of money. Our cities
must show thrift just as the indivi
dual family must, Dut it is wise
to exercise digerimination in dezid
ing whkere to exercise thrift,
Our communities need good ronds
very badly. But if it came down to
the hard choice whether to skimp
on schools, the farsighted citizen
would say it was better to skimp
on the roads. ! '
There are many roads wherce by
careful patching of bad places a
road could be made to go for 2
aumber of years further, thus post
poning the time when a heavy con
struction job will become necessary.
You can't patech a boy’s brains in
she same way. If the opportunity
to ercate the ideals and intelligence
chat enable him to become a good
sitizdn is missed, a chance has been
‘et go that may never return.
School authorities need in these
times to be very practical, and to
stduy ways and means for getting
their results in the least expensive
way. Needless and costly changes
we sometims made in text bonks
and other equipment, for instance,
where if the teachers are competent
practically the same results can be
secured with material already pos
sessed. But when it comes to secur
ing teachers, it does not pay to
economize by employing incompe
tent people in place of those who
really have brains and enthusiasm
and technical training.

LYE DANGEROUS
Concentrated lye, used so freely
and commonly in almost all kitchens
and about the homes of our people,
{s a dangerous poison; it is & caustic
and results in severe burns. Many
caustic soda preparations do not have
a poison label. They should, and we
should have a law on our statute
books" rew it, not only for lye
and caustic mixtures, but for all mix
tures or remedies that are dangerous.
The members of our General Assem
bly from this county could not do
better service than to see that this
law is enacted.
