ALBANY, Ga., Nov. 26.—Just as better grades of cotton and of corn have been produced by care in the selection of seed, there promises to be brought forth in Georgia a bet ter grade of peanuts, a more pro ductive grade and a finer quality. This promise is through the high grade seed the Georgia Peanut Growers Co-operative Association is selecting and offering to its members and to others who may be interested in better peanuts in Georgia. : In all the years peanuts have been grown in Georgia, nothing has ever been done to increase the quality of the product, and the better-seed campaign eof the new co-operative marketing organization is experted to have a marked influence for good on the peanut industry of this state. So many inquiries were received at the headquarters office of the Peanut Association in Albany, ac cording to J. J. Watson, Production and Sales Manager, that it was de cided to offer seed peanuts for sale to the members and to others who might be interested. Careful selec tion has resulted, he said, in the Association being now able to offer the farmers of the state the highest quality of seed ever available for either Spanish or runner peanuts. Mr. Watson, explained, however, that all members of the Peanut As sociation are being urged strongly‘ to plant nothing but the Spanish Peanut for commercial purposes, as. this peanut brings 3 better price and has earned for Georgia the reputa tion it enjoys of producing the high est quality of peanuts in the world. While the two varieties will not “cross”, yet they easily become mix ed in handling, with the result that the grade is lower when they reach the markets and the price is acedrd ingly less to the grower. Georgia has the reputation, Mr. Watson said, and justly so, of producing the pur est and the best quality Spanish Pea-‘ nut in the world, a fact which has helped the Association in securing ’such favorable prices for the pea nuts of its members. Georgia pea nuts are today bringing the highest price of an ypeanuts in the world, he explained, and if the Association is going to continue that altogether desirable condition, which has helped every peanut grower in the state this year, its members must con tinue to grow better and better pea nuts—in other words, o help their Association in its campaign to get “a better price for a better product.” The Peanut Association was able to get the best seed ever offered to peanut growers by selecting the best | CREDIT, CHARACTER, CONFIDENCE There may come a time in your life—for it comes to all of us sooner or later—when the endorsement or recom mendation of a good bank will mean a great deal to you. BANK OF LEESBURG, G. A. Nesbit, President O. W. Statham, Vice-President T. C. Tharp, Cashier. 5 NUMBER 35 PROMINENT SMITH- Mr, E. C. Ellington, a prominent citizen and business man of Smith ville, passed away at the hotel in that city on Saturday of last week. Mr. Ellington had been in declining health for some time but his condi tion was not considered serious. Mr. Ellington was a good man and a Christain being a member of the Baptist church of Smithville, He was at the time of his death about 70 years of age. His body was laid to rest beside that of his wife in Albany Sunday afternoon by the Masons of Smithville Lodge of which he was a member , assisted by sev eral members of the Leesburg Ledge. The funeral was conducted at the ‘hotel by his pastor, Rev. Ham, as sisted by Rev. J. D. Snyder pastor of the Methodist church. - He has many friends throughout Lee county and other sections who are grieved to learn of his death. Three cousins, two from Cusseta, and one from Dublir, were by his side when the end came, WANTED-—Men or women to take orders for genuine guaranteed hosiery for men, women, and chil dren. [Eliminates darning. Salary $75 a week full time, $1.50 an hour spare time. Cottons, heathers, silks. International Stocking Mills, Norristown, Pa. best State in the Union, Mr. Watson declared. He said that it is a well known fact that the peanuts deliver ed to the Association were the best grown in the state this year, because the Association has been strict in its grades from the first. After these 'unifurmly better peanuts were de livered to the Association, the best of these from the best sections were selected. There are a few localities in the state that produce uniformly better peanuts than any other. The pick of the peanuts from these sec tiohs were taken and reselected. Then they were 'sent through a re cleaning plant, with the result that the seed finally selected represent the acme of the crop in the state. Mr. Watson was asked if he did not| believee that the Association’s campaign for better seed would cause an overproduction of peanuts next year, especially in view, of the high prices the Association has been so influential in bringing. He said that he thought that high price cot ton and the labore shortage would prevent too many peanuts being planted next year.
