Temperance Convention. The Temperance Convention which met nt ; Atlanta on the 22d inst., was organized by Selecting Rev. Dr. Felton, of Cass county, as President, aud Messrs. Peterson, of Gwinnett j and Seals, of Greene, as Secretaries. Wc learn there were about eighty dele- | gates present, representing twenty eight counties. B. H. Overby, Esq , of Atlanta, • was nominated for Governor by the follow- j ing vote : B. H. Overby, of Atlanta, 58. W. H. Crawford, of Sumter, 22. The convention passed the following reso lutions : 1. Resolved, That the prohibition of the traffic in ardent spirits as a beverage, pre sents the only hope of relief from the blight- : Ing arid destructive influence of spirituous liquors. 2. Resoloed, That we consider the success ! Os our cause paramount to all political ques tions now under discussion in this State, and pledge ourselves to the promotion thereof. 3. Resulted, That it is expedient for this Convention to nominate a cumulate to be ‘ t-uu for the office of Governor of this State, fit {ln? ensuing election, known to be a prop er exponent of these views. 4. That we recoinmeu 1 to the friends of prohibition to present candidates for the Legislature in the several counties of i this State at the ensuing election, who may be relied on to carry out by proper legisla tion, the views of this Convention. Gen. Cass Speech in the Senate. Washington, Feb. 20. The Senate on Monday passed Judge Doug lass hill proposing Northern Central and] Southern Routes as a substitute lor the’orig-• inal Pacific It. Road bill, reported by the se-j lect committee. i To-day, Tuesday, Mr. Cass spoke defining his position in regard to Lord Clarendons speech in parliament in which that gentle man disclosed the views and intentions of the British and French alliance in reference to affairs on this continent. Mr. Cass refer ed to the position assumed by France and England in their interference in the Cuba mid San Juan, and Sandwich Islands’ ques tions, as a matter of grave importance to tire American people. Mr. Cass was followed on the smut subject by Messrs. Mason and Clay ton. Politicai. Sermons.— In the lowa House of Representatives, on the 221 ult., the bil ( in relation to the observance of the Chris tian Sabbath being under consideration, the following amendment was offered ; ..
