Etowah Bridge.
In a letter to Gov Johnson. Maj. Cooper;
gives the following statistics of this great,
■work, recently destroyed on the State road • [
u Etowah Bridge waiTcormneneed in 1839]
and finished in 1841. at a cost of jibout
$70,000 It was 1825 feet long and 70 feet
high over the river. Some of the timbers
were decayed, especially in that portion iin-j
mediately above the river, where it was ex-]
posed to the moisture and fog constantly ris i
ing from the water. The reconstruction otl
this portion of the Bridge was resolved upon/
and plced under contract, ns far back as tin j
year 1853. to be completed Ju y Ist 1555- It ]
was considered that the remainder ot tin j
Bridge might bo safely used uutill 185 b
4i Under this contract the masonry was
finished previous to the fire, from which i 1
has sustained only very trifling damage.-
The contractor had also procured nearly all
the bridge timber, which was fortunately
(piled beyond the reach of the fl lines.
The whole amount of this contract so:
•mnsonrv and bridging was £30,000, oi wliiol
*tbe road has already paid £21,000, and tin
remaining $14,000 would have been pay a
*oy the Ist of July, even if the bridge 1.
‘not- been destroyed.
< Since the disaster a contract has beei
■closed, by which our trains are to be passe
‘Oil the Ist of July, involving an additiona
outlay of 23,100. Os this additional amoutn
the sum of 4 GOO as for trestle work which
may be regarded as a temporary structure
while the 18,500 is for earth and stone-work
entering into the plan for the permanent
improvement at that point. The new contrac
provides that the trustle work shall be filled
by an embankment during the whole of tin
year 185i5, requiring no payment this year
. From this statement you will perceive,
that with the exception of the S4.COD to b.
paid for trestle work, our loss at Etowah
cous'srs mainly of precipitating demau Is up
on our treasury for a work of permanent re
construction which could not have been de
ferred with safety more than two years long
