around its standard thousands who are al- J ways found more willing to fight against j Catholicism than to practise their own pro- , session. Odious religious tests which have ! been successfully reasoned down and remov- , ed from their loathsome touib and quickened Into life. No Catholic is to he tolerated, no j matter how sincerely he may revere his Ma- j kcr; he is to hold no office in the gift of the j people, have no part in the government nor interest in any of its concerns, while the atheist, deist, debauchee, infidel, Mormon. 6r buddhist, is recognized as a good and worthy brother. ‘ They have fearful nppreliension that the Catholic church will soon overrun and pos sess the country, to the ruin alike of repub licanism and religion—and all tins, too, When that church is in the rapid decline in the old country, and while it is only contin uing in its fold a moiety of those who reach , our shores strong in their attachment to. Us ; oause! These apprehensions, then are entire- i \j unfounded in fact and opposed to common -t *ense. It is only a trick of crafty palitica! j managers to bring to their aid the religious j ciement of their country, while it is genera- ! ’ting dissensions, sectarian animosities, and : ihe rankest intolerance. History ami experience alike teach that no people were ever persecuted for opinion’s i sake without coming out in the enT vastly increased in numerical strength and public favor. It is a saying, both old and true in all ages ‘-the Wood of the martyr is the seed of j the church.” No form of religion has been ! put down by persecution of its professors. ! This order swears its members never to j vote for a foreign-born citizen to fill any of- j fice in the gift of the people. Thus, bir th placc, rather than virtue and intelligence, is made a qualification for places of trust and responsibility ! TVliat an absurdity is here ! The know nothing principles and practices would elevate a Benedict Arnold to the pres idency, and at the same time proscribe such men as Lafayette, Hamilton, Montgomery, (dates, Steuben, DeKalb, Moultrie, St. Clair, j and a host of noble and gallant men wbo j freely spent their treasure and'their blood j in our glorious struggle for liberty. And I are the people of Connecticut prepared to Adopt such principles as these—principles ; which are at war with the machinery of the j American government ? We have too much j -confidence in their intelligence and honor to ! believe they will loug submit to this great ! wrong. confident that there ai’e at j this time thousands in the order wbo are 1 similarly situated to ourselves, and who al- ; ready see that its influence is for evil, and , •only evil, upon every interest of our country, j We know of many in other parts of the.Rtate j who feel with us in this matter, and who are j Tesolved to come out and wash.their hands of ( this foul and disgraceful business. The foregoing is a brief statement of facts; no argument is needed to add to its force or •develop more clearly tbe character of an or .gan zation which, while it ostracises all those born in a foreign land, draws into its toils . ‘thousands of honest and unsuspecting Amer icans, and then attempts to reduce them to -a condition of servitude, strip them of their individuality, degrade them to the position” •of mere machines, and compel them at the bidding of their masters to disobey the dic tates of their consciences, surrender their ■oaths of allegiance to the State of which they . !IS. dthijTs may choose to submit to such atro cious despotism, but as fur ourselves we de nounce it as contrary to the genius of our institutions, at war with freedom of thought, , V-ind deserving the open denunciation of every true American. Resolve 7, That the officers and members of this council affix their names to tbe above. Resolved, That the papers in this State ■opposed to this organization are hereby re quested to publish tbe foregoing. B. P. BILL, President. Daniel S. Stv.tv, Marshal. Charge- A. Tin any, Instructor. Sign’d faj sixty-seven members of the Council. What the Figures Say. The Nashville Gazette presents a table of i showing the number of know noth *aSs-n ht„<*u state. The Union from the same figures prints results to which South ern men cannot feet indifferent. The Union says : . lie wish to show, as we conclusive ly* that the platform, which seeing to afford southern know nothings so much satisfaction, although adopted by a majority of the SU tv-s, was rejected by an immense majority of the know- BsKfeiags. All the slave States voted for the plat form, together with New York and Califor nia, the number of know-nothings claimed in the affirmative States, is as follows : In the Slave States, • 390,041 Tn New York, ISO,OOO In California, 35,000 lutal, for tbe platform, 005,941 TJie remaining States voted against the platform, and the number of know-nothings in those States i3 set down at 709,330. Be thus see that there are against this national platform,” 709,336 For it,. 005,941 Majority against it, 103,395 And this is the result which puts southern know-nothings in such exstacieml This hea vy majority not only voted against the plat form, but utterly repudiated it, and with drew from the convention! So we see that, against this platform there is a majority of 1 more than* 160,000 know-nothings ! -The know-nothing platform, on which southern j men are asked to stand, is in a minority- in the know-nothing councils. The case might be made still worse for the know nothings, but this view of it is had enough, Thus ( in New York and California, winch States are set down as voting lor the platform, tne views of the seceders are no toriously the tiews of the great Mas3 of the opponents of the regular democratic party. ® know-nothings have no hope of carrying ! ■? lt 61 State * livery free State which the j * nothings have carried or have auy hope j x 1 scce ~ e< P f r °m the convention 1 hndrepud.atedthepbuf.r.n. ! } m P ortttut by adopting this W *?> to gain No know-nothing W , 11Dg P *Worm ? to assert that, on the ve tba as sound as the Nations D^’^ 00 ’ \ l is : *brm, And ‘he tolerable ffctoh wtfc ~ to-out iC ! for the purpose of uniting with one which, Jj u tbe free States, has resolved itself into a ! fanatical abolition pai ty.
