*!— 1 r-r— ----ft(rainst the Southern Delegates to the Know Nothing National Council are true. We dure not trust ourselves with the liberty of char acterising the conduct of these faithless Southern delegates. Wc, therefore, adopt the language of the Richmond Enquirer and commend it to the careful consideration of Southern men. The Enquirer says, J >< Now, what docs all this mean, but that the American Organ, which is held up for its devotion to the South, was and is wiling to surrender a ground of the most vital im portance to the South ? A critical question, now before the country, is the admission of Kansas into the Anion as a fetate. Under the lead of Douglas and other noble North ern men, the sectional and degrading line of the Missouri Compromise was blotted out, and thereby to Southerners was conceded, # an act of simple justice, the right to carry their own property into the territory. In the progress of time, and in spite of the or ganized°emigration movements of New Eng land Abolitionists, the Southern men have acquired a foothold in Kansas by the pop ular vote, with a bright prospect of estab lishing their rights under the constitution, which gives equal protection to all sorts of property. Just at this important crisis, when the South is about to have justice done to her citizens, such friends of the South as Kenneth I-ayner and the American Organ etep forward and denounces the repeal of the Missouri Compromise as * a blunder,’ and as , the most reckless net of legislation record ed in American history.’ The American Or gan goes still father and calls upon the < American’ organization to wipeout practi cally this awful blunder,’ and to virtual ly restore, without legislation, the original compact made between the north and South in IS2o'— in other words, really to give new life to the degrading Missouri Compromise, and to restore a gross and unqualified act of injustice and degration to the South. And all this to conciliate the abolitionists and to give peace and harmony to the great Amer ican,’ party 1 But the reasons given are, if possible, more monstrous than the proposition itself. They are that the whole question is a mere ; shadow of an abstraction ; that all the ) Southern men in the Philadelphia Council! argued that Kansas could not be a slave j State, and that not ono single member of j the Council was heard to express & wish that j Kansas should be a slave State. Whet an ; extraordinary representation the South had ! in the Council 1 Men who, instead of stand- 1 iag by the South in the hour of trial, and when by the union of her sons, the South ! might acquire practical justice and benefit, threw down their arms to the obolitiomists, and surrendered at discretion all the real rights of the SoutJjo! According to the Or gan, every representative of the South sur rendered the whole question and threw the whole weight of his position into the anti slavery scale, so far as Kansas is concern ed! •. Is not the Organ condemned out of his mouth, in the opinion of every true South ern man r When such sentiments as we Lave above quoted, are publicly proclaimed as the voice of even the Know Nothings of the South, how can they expect to dupe the South by hollow platforms into an affiliation wkh so detestable a party ? Every step token to patch ur. h? disjoint and fi agmente of < Sam’ exp oses the deception in anew and i more damning light. The whole concern is a wretched cLeat, and the whole South will, like Virginia, repudiate and spit upon it.” Cclvmbns Times A Sentinel. From the BarJstown Saturday Gazette. To Masons who have Joined the Se cret Order called Know-Nothings’. I wish to ask you whether or not it is not inconsistent with your obligation as Masons to join or remain with this new order ? I intend to write nothing that is not proper to be written, hut give you plain facts. Almost the first knowledge impressed upon our minds in A. Y. Masonary is the fact that it does not interfere with religion or poll- j tics. It receives in its bosom the good of all denominations, Catholic or Protestant, Chris- j Can or Jew ; it (unlike know nothingism) scorns the Atheist. In its glorious precept” we are taught that we owe each other a fra ternal feeling, or brotherly love, which should last through life. We manifest this attending even to the long home a dead bro ther, ty depositing with his remains the sprig of Cassia. Let me ask you if Masonry dees not teach and charge us to be true to cur gr. ; mincnt. And docs or not that gov- ; eminent, in accordance with our beloved i principles alluded to, say that no religious test shall ever be required as a qualifica tion to any office or public trust under the United States ?’* To these principles as land down I consider myself most solemnly pledg ed and sworn to maintain. I, as a Mason, consider further, that I could not be a member of their new order, even if found acceptable at their council, for l could not agree or swear that I tcuuld only vote for naf tire-born cilizenf for ail office of honor, trust, or profit in the gift of the peoul$ a the exclusion of all foreigners, aliens, and ’ Raman Catholics in particular, and tcilh out regard to party predilection. As I understand Masonry, I have been one for a good many years.) its aim is moral improvement: its end, charity; from i all nations and creeds we profess these same principles. Let me ask you if there is a native-born American, who is my brother Mason in good standing, who is a Catholic in belief, or gay the husband of a Catholic wife, or another who may Le a foreigner and nat wnlized citizen, how ctm I, as a Mason, take an oath to proscribe either, being a Mason, because of their religion or birth ? If I am in need or distress—yea. if lam drowning— ; are they not as much bound to relieve me or fly to my rescue, at the risk of tbeir lives, as j my native-born brethren of Protestant be lief? Would they not do it as soon ? I ask yon, am 1 not bound as such to do likewise t* or for them ? Do we not meet them upon’ w CV ?j an< * * >art them on the square? °uiu not all this occur, whether in this V l Ey ,° tbeT contiße nt ? If what I here sav, tno* U *, lrUe ’ tbCn Masonr y nothing— tW, TT™ eTerythin g How can I, ! If I swear i to wbaj, is required by this new ordor, I j swear against Masonry—l swear against j what I have sworn —l commit, virtually, perjury! . Precept and Practice. j A habit of reverential obedience to the laws, whether national, State, or municipal, ! : un til they are either repealed or declared 1 unconstitutional by the proper authority. r Know- nothing Platform. The above (Says the Louisville Times) is I the proposition of the know-nothings. What | are their practices ? The constitution says there shall be no religions test. The know : nothing have made Protestantism a qualifi cation for oSee. They have excluded dele gates from their order sent by the States of Alabama and Louisiana because they were j Catholics. The law of the United States and the different States allow naturalized citizens to hold office. The know-nothings say they shall not.
