€l)t Ipiit nf 1%. Prosaic view of Poetry. How very absurd is half the stuff Called “poetry,” now-a-davs! The “ stanzas,” and “ epics, ,s and “ odes,” are enough To put every lover of rhyme in a huff, An disgust the oid hens with their “lays.” There’s one insists upon being a “ bird,” To “ fly to his lady-love’s bower When he knows that the lady to, whom he refer red, Don’t own such a thing; for (upon my word) In a “ jailer,” brick house, up in story the third, She is living at this very hour. One asks but a “ cave in some foreign dell, Away from this cold world’s strife.” Now the woods in fine weather are well, But give him a six weeks’ rainy spell, And he’ll soon “ cave in” in his forest cell, And be sick enough of the life. Another young man would tike to d>e “ When the roses bloom in spring.” Just let him be sick, and he’d change his cry; His “ passing away” is “ all in my eye;” Os “dreamless sleep” he gets quite shy; It isn’t exactly the thing. One “loves”—bow he loves—“ The glittering foam, And the mad wave’s angry strife.” Just take the young genius who wrote the “ pome,” Where tbej“ billows dash and the sea-birds roam,” And he’d give all he had to be safely at home ; He’d stay there the rest of his life. Another “ heart broken” calls on his “ own” To cheer him with “one sweet smile Then he follows it up, in a love sick tone, With his “bosom pangs;” if the truth were known. It isn’t the “ love” that, causes his moan, But a superabundance of bile . /ass- Money is like a hedgehog—very dif ficult to hold. fST* A Yankee always looks haggard and ncjvods, as if he were chasing a dollar. Alcohol was chiefly used, immediate ly after its first discovery, for giving a flush to ladies’ cheeks! A spiral level watch has been inven ted io London that will go for a month with one winding up. ySff-Wiggles thinks that the label on a cer tain popular nostrum, Buy, me, and I'll do you good,” should read thus —lt Buy me and I’ll do you—good !” “ I love you Ruth. You surely have been able to discern it! My love is ardent and sincere. Oh, say that you’ll return it !” “ Return it, Paul ? No no, not I. I’ve stri ven hard to gain it— And now I’ve got it, by your leave, I’d rath er far retain it!” What a Head.—A barrel of oats fell from the third story of a ware house in Nor folk the other day, hit a negro plumb on the head and knocked him down. Negro got ebook his head, and walked off. &£T We once heard a rich man who was badly injured by being run over, say, **lt isn’t the accident,” said he, u that I mind: that isn’t the thing; hut the idea of being run over by an infernal swill cart, makes me mad.” Lunatics proverbially live to a good old age, and one of the proverbs, upon which the fact is founded, is, we suppose, the old household truism that cracked vessels last the longest.” Money is defined to be a composition for taking 3tains out of character. Beauty and genius one must put far from him, if he will not be their servant. Never put your horse to a hard work upon a full stomach. A Western editor closes an obituary notice of a young lady by remarking : ..She possessed a voice of powerful flexibility, and was fond of attending Macallister’s enter tainments.” jjgy Dr. Johnson opce speaking of a quarrelsome fellow, said if he had two, ideas in his head they would fall out with, one another.” gggr On one of the risers in lowa, the only ferry is a sorrel horse. lie crosses three at a time—two on his back, and one fastened to his tail. pgr .. I dontlike to patronize this line,” ■aid a culprit to a hangman. *O, never mind this once, it will soon suspend its oper at ions.” A clergyman catechising the youth of his church, put the following question from the catechism to a girl:—.. What is your consolation in life and death ?” The poor girl smiled, but did not answer. The priest insisted. .< Well, then,” said she, • since I must tell, it is the young Printer on Walnut st.” is a married man like a candle? Because he sometimes goes out at night when he oughtn't to. Bkautiful Extract.—Helping a young lady out of a mud puddle. p&S* The man who wont into a base un dertaking, has found it a baseless operation and has given it up. ftlgr Pay promptly what you owe—or he Without a good < moral character.” jfgrTbe line, *Oh for a lodge in some vast wilderness,” is said to have been first uttered by a countryman who lodged for the first time in a cheap boarding house in a ci ty. We can imagine his feelings. <I find, Dick that you are in the habit of taking my best jokes, and passing them off as your own. Do you call that gentlemanly conduct ?” .To be sure I do, Tom. A true gentleman will always take a joke from a friend.” An old Bachelor—The man who carries pins in his coat collar. /ar* If a man marry a shrew, are wa to suppose he is s/irewed 1 fiAßr It is supposed that the man who threw the firebrand of disunion,” burnt his fingers. jfcjT Staggers has not made up his mind on some religious questions, but he ap proves of stawberry festivals decidedly. He •ays he baa known several cases of interes ting young ladies, compfhining of loss of atrength and appetite, who on being presett ed with tickets have instantly recovered in a surprising manner, and gone into the straw berries and cream with an energy quite com forting to their friends. Staggers calls it the strawberry cure, and says it has never been known to fsil. ptr A young gentleman of ten winters threatened to whip his father, because the old man was an Irishman. There is nativ ism for yon. 1 J£T The young lady who jumped at an offer” dislocated her ankle and threw her heart out of place. At last acounts she was recovering. SObcKisetoeife brTtish periodicals. Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine (Toij) The present critical state of European affairs will render these publications unusually interest ing during the year ’55. They will occupy a mid dle ground between the hastily written news items, crude speculations and flying rumors of the daily Journal, and the ponderous Tome of the future historian, written after the living in terest and excitement of the great political e vents of the time shall have passed away. It is to these Periodicals that people must look for the only really intelligible and reliable history of current events, and as such, in addition to their well established literary, scientific and theological character, we urge them upon the consideration of the reading public. Arrangements are in progress for the receipt of early sheets from the British Publishers, bv which we shall be able to place all our in the hands of subscribers, about as soon air they can be furnished with the foreign copies. Although this will involve a very large outlay <ui our part., we shall continue to furnish the Pe riodicals at the same low rates as heretofore, viz: Per Annum: For any one of the four Reviews, $3 00 For any two of the Reviews, 5 00 For any three of the four Reviews, 7 00 For all four of the Reviews, 8 00 For Blackwood’s Magazine 8 00 For Blackwood and three Reviews, 9 00 For Blackwood and the four Reviews, 10 00 Payments to-be made, in all cases, in advance. He treats diseases of the middle and internal Ear with Medicated Douches, such as is practised in the Infirmaries of Berlin, Leipsic, Brussels, Hamburg and St. Petersburg, and lately by the most distinguished London Aurists, with the most wonderful success; indeed, it is the only method that has been uniformly successful.— The best proof of the efficacy of the treatment will be a reference to nearly nine hundred names, residents of the United states, Canada, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, who lidve been re stored to acute hearing, and not a single, solita ry case, to our knowledge, did we fail to effect either a partial or total restoration of the Hear ing, when our advice and instructions were faithfully and punctually adhered to. Many] who could not hear the report of a pistol at arm’s length, can now hear a watch beat at the distance of four feet. In cases of mucuous accumulation in the Eus tachian Tube and Tympanum, Inflammation of the Mucus Membrane, Nervous Affections, Dis ease of the Membrana Tympnni, ocmmonly called the “ Drum,” or when the disease can be traced to the effects of Fever, colds, the use of Quinine, Mercurial Medicines, Gatherings in the Ears in childhood, Ac., Dr. Alsophert’s treat ment stands pre-eminent. Where the Auditory Canal Is dry and scaly, with little or no secre tion, when the deafness is accompanied with noises in the Ear, like falling water, chirping of insects, ringing of bells, rustling of leaves, con tinual pulsations, discharge of matter, or when, in stooping, a sensation is felt as if a rush of blood to the head took place, when the hearing is less acute in dull, cloudy weather, or when a cold has been taken, this method of treating this disease, is infallible. In deaf and dumb cases my/experience war rants me in saying, that if the hearing was at j any time good, very much can be accomplished. 1 In the Deaf aud Dumb School, out of a class of ] 11, I succeeded in restoring four to acute hear ing. Dr. Alsophert begs respectfully to state, that in those cases he undertakes lie guarantees j a successful result, complete restoration, or such a marked improvement as will be perfectly sat isfactory, if INs remedies are faithfully applied, and directions adhered to. Applicants will please state their age, dura tion of disease, if matter issues from the external passage, if there are noises in the Ears, state of general health, and what they suppose to have been the cause of the deafness. When the hear ing is restored, it is expected that those in easy circumstances will pav liberally. All diseases of the Eye successfully treated by the application of Medicated Vapors, Ae., an infallible and painless treatment for the disea ses of the Eve, acute and chronic, cataract,] specks, inflammation, film and weakness of vis- j ion, granulation of the lids, ulceration of the Lachryna! glands, Ac. To the astonishing and gratifying effects of this treatment, the child, the voutn, those of 1 mature age, as well as those far advanced in j life, all bear testimony to its wonderfully reno vating, healing am! soothing effects. .Medicine, apparatus, Ac., will be sent to any part at my own expense. In the treatment of Consumption by inliala-i tion, I have obtained the results which warrant] ! me in asserting, that it is as curable as diseases! of the stomach and liver. Breathing Medicines directly into the lungs is j certainly the rational mode of attacking the disease, and like many other great beneficent discoveries, it seems strange why such treatment was not resorted to long ago. Where there is life thei - e is now assured hope for the most seem ! ingly hopeless cases, as throughout all the stages I of this insidious disease, the wonderful nnd ben j efficient effects of his treatment aro soon appar ent. Lh ave pleasure in referring to 207 names, residents of New York find neighborhood, who have been restored to vi gorous health. About one third of the above number according to the parents’ own state-! meats, were considered hopeless cases. The inhaling Method is soothing, safe, and] speedy, arid consists in the administration of medicines in such a manner that they are con veyed into the Lungs in the form of vapor, and produces their action at the seat of the dis ease.
