“tS whole concern Mr. Underwood said,
thus fixed up, became a . spring board,’ sim
ilar to what is used at a < show,’ and it was
believed to be a capital idea to open a Free
Show in the Cherokee couutry, inasmuch,
as our friends had all the necessary materi- j
a! for the crowd. Placards were stuck up
everywhere: the performance commenced, j
and has bren going on for some time. Cone
is the *> ring master” that struts by the pole,
with whip in hand. Word, is the clown;
Tumlin, the door keeper ; and Miller turns
the somersets—he is the only ground and j
lofty tumbler in the world, now living, that j
can beat McCollom who turned sixty-five
somersets in a minute, as many backwards
as forwards! Occasionally they have a
monkey, and a big fat. boy,’ who cries to
make the boys laugh. For the benefit of the j
Road, which die Doctor seems to have
greatly at heart, I advise the people of Gcor- i
•ri-i all to take a ride and see the * free
sltOtC.
The doctor commenced his feats of activity !
in early life, ami lias been a remarkable
performer ever since. In 1840, it is report
ed of him that he started off for * Matty
1 an.’ He didn't like the State General ,
Harrison hailed from ; besides he was for a
Bank which the D ctor could not swallow.
But after a while when the -Log Cabin
Boys’ became numerous and built * cabins.’ !
and drank a great deal of • hard cider,’ and
made and hung up a great many strings of
i red pepper,’ and the < log cabin’ was put
upon wheels, the Doctor jumped in and took
a ride, and gathering strength as he went,
shouted* Hurrah for Tippecauoe nud Tyler j
toV
In 1850, when there was a general * blow
up,’ the Doctor and myself started together
for the Democratic Party. We b’ew the !
same horn ; we blew it wild and shrill; but
in 185- there came about so many parties i.
and tickets in Georgia, that the trail was j
v ry hard to follow, ami 1 sin not very clear
if w<; did'iit run a while on the * bach track!’
Certain and sure we lost it for a time, and
never was on the right trail attain until
General Pierce was elected President.
lu lßf>2, after Ilerschc’. V. Johnson was
nominated for Governor, aud Mr. Jenkins
also, a democratic convention met at Cal j
houn. Gordon county, to nominate candidates
for Judge and for Congress ; and the Doc
tor and myself were both in that wild hunt ’ i
were both good democrats, * from the way
we spoke.’ We both made a speech, as did
several others. The Doctor had the advan- i
fc ige, nud he spoke fast, and urged the mem- ;
bers of the convention to act harmoniously, {
Y r the good of the party. And he ha l al
so a word of admonition for the candidates, j
lie said that all had spelled the word * Bern- !
ar.rat’ very well, and pronounced it too!
shat he would give out the word to spell af- j
ler the nomination, which was the word *.</r- j

ter THE NOMINATION AND PRONOUNCE IT
too —nml thus he closed one of his most
brilliant and character!stic efforts !~
The nomination was to, and did, take place
t! e next day ; but whether he, the doctor,
saw that his speech had not made the im
nrrssion lie expected, nud that neither iie, ;
imr his friend, would l>e nominated, or what
else. I cannot tell : but before the boys were ;
called up to spell, the Doctor was hone, j
and after that he lost his way, and voted i
lor neither of the nominees of that Convert- |
tion, or for Johnson, but voted for Jenkins, ;
Tripp* aa4 Lewis Tumlin !
‘VeM, in the month of June 1855, the Doc
sor rn his course, got as we supposed, in !
■the democratic way again ; and on the lltli
•of June, he was in council with a part of the
. Home Regency.’ as they are termed by way j
-of derision. On the 12th, Judge Lumpkin
•was nominated foi Council.
The Doctor is styled by his friends, Ihe !
Demosthenes of the Mountains. This is a
mistake ; he is ho Grecian but a Roman !
When Catalinc endeavored to ov rthrew
the liberties of Rome, he organized a secret, |
•oathbound, political society, and. being a j
member of it, he sat daily iu council, with
tlie Roman * Senators ;’ (Regency) and the .
question is submitted to the people of Geor- I
gia, which the Doctor most nearly resembles
Cicero or Cataline ?

Mr. Editor : —I am not equal to some of 1
ii Sam's” followers, in bragging—have no
turn that way—but am willing to wager
something in a quiet way, sometimes, on elec- j
tions.
1 therefore offer the following points on
the Georgia elections:
1. I will bet £IOO that James I, Seward,
the anti-Kuow Nothing candidate for Con- j
gross in the First District, will be elected, j
2. I will bet £IOO that Martin J. Craw- !
ford will be elected in the Seoond District, j
3. I will bet £IOO that Hiram Warner will
be elected in the Fourth District.
4. I will bet £IOO that John H. Lumpkin
will be elected in the Fifth District.
5. 1 will bet SIOO that Howell Cobb will
be elected in the Sixth District.
6. I will bet £IOO that Alexander 11. !
Stephens will be elected in the Eighth Dis- j
trict.
7. I will bet £IOO tliat tbc nnti-Know
Nothings will elect five out of eight members
■of Congress.
8. I will bet £IOO that Johnson beats
Andrews, for Governor, 3,000 votes.
9. £IOO that Johnson is elected Governor
by the popular vote.
10. £IOO that l win a majority of these
nino bets.
These ten bets to be taken together, with
the privilege to the taker of doubling the
amount on each point.
I make an additional proposition :
Os these ten points, the taker may select
three, and I will select two, and bet £4OO
•on each of the five.
The money to be staked when the bets are
taken. No Proscription.
Andrew J.vcjcson,—- He denied that
Andrew Jackson, if alive, would consent to
ba considered as a democrat of this school,
and insisted that they should be styled the
anti-American party.”
The above speech was recently made by a
sound and an aspiring know nothing candi
date for oflioe. It called forth the follow
ing reply from the Louisiana Courier :
We would like, * for the fun of thing,’
to see the Old Hickory once more in the flesh
with our young friend before him uttering
Fuch language. We rather think the gift of
speech wuull fail the orator uuder the tefi-
ble denial’ the storm old patriot would
throw back to him. %Are these know noth
ings determined to desecrate the memory of
all the heroes and statesmen of the past,
which is embalmed in the hearts of their
grateful countrymen, in their efforts to effect
their unhallowed purposes ? The idea of
Andrew Jackson being a know nothing !
Bah ! It is as contemptible as it is false to
his whole glorious career.”
Seven Days Later from Europe.
PACI F I C .
Columbia, Aug. 22.
The steamship Pacific has arrived, with la
ter news from Europe.
The General news brought by the Pacific
is unsatisfactory.
There is nothing of importance from the
Crimea, except the renewal of the bombard
ment of Sebastopol.
It is rumored that Revel had been success
fully bombarded. The report is not credi
ted.
The French Government has discovered
the Legitimist conspiracy.
Omar Pasha has taken command of the
Turkish army in Asia.
The seige cf Kars is unchanged,
Taganrog and Berkiausk have been success
fully bombarded. The reported bombard
ment of Revel probably given out of the tu
mor that the fleet of the allies is gathering
in the Baltic for the purpose of attacking
Helsingford.
The French papers assert that the object
of the Legitimists conspiracy was to excite
an insurrection in Spain, and thereby aid
Russia. It is thought doubtful about Spain
’ furnishing live thousand men, to go into the
pay of the allies.

WASHINGTON CITY, D. C.
A FAMILY JOURNAL OF UTKR.ITURK AND NEWS FOR
SOUTHERN REAL MRS.
rpilE South has too long been dependent up
I on the northern cities for its periodical lit

New York, and Philadelphia,-have swept like a
flood over that part of the nation south ofManou
and Dixon’s Line, many of them carrying with
them some of the prejudices of ablitionism ; amt
inculcating, to a greater or less extent, doctrines
injurious to southern institutions. This depen
dence of the mass of southern readers should be
thrown off—and it is believed would have been
long ago, if there h id been facilities in the Smith
for the publication of first class literary papers.
Tim Sfkctator—ls published by a gentle
i man who lias long been connected with some of
! the southern dailies, and lias been undertaken
j to supply this want —that of a high-toned week
i ly paper of Southern interest and character.
I The general plan of the paper is ns follows;
j It has eight pages; three of which are filled

er making a plan which will be rigidly adluo-i and

country, North or South.
The Spf.ctator is printed on new type and
