The Know Nothings had deter-! mined on a coup d'etat, and had all their ar- , rangemeuts made for a grand flourish. Their j object was evidently to embarrass the Governor : aud his friends, but the failure was a most sig nal one. Their request for n division of the j time was promptly complied with—Rev. Mr. ! Howard being allowed an hour and a half, and , the Governor replying in a speech of two hours, i \erer did we witness a more ignominious de feat. Our sympathies were aroused for the rev- I erend gentleman, although he was our political ; oppouent. We feel assured of one thing, that he will never attempt to meet the Governor a- j gain. Altogether it was a glorious day for the ; Democracy ol Cass. Look out for Misrepresentations. This is the last week of the Canvass and j we warn our friends to keep a good look out for electioneering documents. The country will bo flooded with them—filled with the foulest misrepresentations and falsehoods Let every democrat and anti Nnow Nothing be on the alert. All sorts of stories will be started because our enemies know that we shall have no time to contruuict and expose j them. The Fair of the Southern Central Agri cultural Society w :S. in n.any respects, a failure. The attendance was not so large nor the contributions so fu 1 as usual. Ic was too early iu the season, and we arc glad to hear that the committee have determined on the month of October for the future fairs. Cass county, as usual, contributed largely. A correspondent of the Carolina Banner . S C.) tl us speaks of several of our citizens and their contributions: .. The show of Devons was contributed al together by Mr Deters, and draughts made from his celebrated stock, as well as the swine, which consisted of the Berkshire and Essex breeds. Our old friends, Cols. J. W Watts and J. M Young, (formerly of Lau rens, but now of Cass county. Georgia,) con tributed Duihams from stock from Col Wade Hampton's and Col. J D Williams herds, which were a decided improvement upon this class of former years. Col. Watts was strong iu Merino, Cotswold and broad tailed sheep ; whilst Mr. Peters showed a pen of superb South-Downs.” ** The ladies’ department was the centre 1 of attraction. Mrs Rowland, a fine sped ■} men of the up country Carolina housewife, j received a large number of premiums for i domestic fabrics of general utility. She is I the lady of M>ij. Rowland, the whole-souled j proprietor of the Rowland Springs, and in j Georgia sets a good example of what Caro i lina mothers can do.” >• i Look well to your Tickets. We have heard it hinted that our enemies j will have tickets printed with all sorts of j headings, their object being to deceive voters ; who dislike that party, into the belief that! they are voting against it, when they are in reality voting for it. Look well to your j tickets! Don’t be satisfied with the mere i heading, but read every name on it, and i see that they are the simon pure, aud above I all don't split your tickets. Mr. Editor : I see in the Rome Courier a letter written by the Rev. J. P, Woodson, in reply to a letter written by myself some 1 time since, denying the charge of Know No thingism. In this lie does uot attempt to j discuss the political questions, but attacks ! my character and points me out as a liar ! and an eavesdropper with many other things, i and comes out aud says that all liars sha.l ’ have their portion in the lake that I urns ! with fire and brimstone I suppose thecon j viction of Mr. Woodson's own mind has ■ taught him this as well as the Word of God, I for it is said by the same Word that drnnk ! ards, and whoremongers, aud idolators, and | all kinds of abominntois shall have their ! portion in the same lake. Now, Mr. Wood- j j son be so good as to acknowledge for which | of these abominations you was expelled from ; the church or why it is that you are not iden- J i titied with your bretheren. Now a man that i bears the title of Reverend should be of un- i ; blemished character. Now, Mr. Woodson, i ; let me say to you that I have lived a mcra ; ber of the Baptist church for fifteen years, j and I am glad that I can have it to boast of ! that I have never been held accountable for I ! disorder; and not only so, I don't hesitate to believe that if I was to apply for member ship with the American party but that 1 , would be heartily received But will this Rev. gentleman tell us the reason why he ; was black balled out on his first applica tion ? There must certainly be a screw! loose or lost out of Mr Woodson s character j somewhere. He also states in his letter, i after burlesqueing me, that hi could not; expect anything better of a man who con- I fines himself to the shade. This, I suppose, , was intended to expose my occupation.— , Trn'y, my business confines ma to the shade ; where I make my living honestly, and get no man's money only as lie gets value receiv- j ed for it My trade is a vocation by which ; the community are beoefitted. But who derives any benefit from Mr Woodson, who ! has imposed himself on the people profess- ( ing great skill and knowledge of minerals, j : and for five dollars would point out their j j fortunes—where they wero deposited iu tbo i j earth ? How many five dollar bills has he j ! received by his humbuggery ? I will now say to the Rev. Mr. Woodson, the next man you wish to stigmatize you had better en- i quire after his character, and if you find i him to be clear of charge you would do well tosay but little about him. Yours respectfully, II D. TEAT, Cassville , Ga. ! Keep ti before the people, that Garnett ‘ Andrews has proscribed two religious sects, the Uniyersalists and Catholics, aud that the organ of the Andrews party in Georgia, de nounced the ablest of the Primitive Baptist ministers; all going to show that the Kuow ! Sine Cheers for the /democrats ! A. HILL, j COMMUNICATED. Cedar Town, Sept. 22, 1855 IH. i tor Cherokee Georgian, Jfluricfia. Dear Sir: I ask but a small space in your next, to reply to a letter in your Inst paper, which came by last night's mail, over : the signature ol thirteen highly respectable citizens of Polk county, in relation to the change of the Rtpublican Union now under j the editorial charge of myself and Mr. Iliggs. It contains a copy of the articles signed by ! those thirteen and others who advanced i money fur the press, &c., upon which the ! paper is printed. This is the first copy we ; ever saw of that article. The original we have not yet been able to see. If it conforms to the published copy we will immediately pay up the outstanding liabilities or give up the paper. Wo treated with Mr. Cothrun as ..editor and proprietor” of the paper, as he was weekly published to the world ; and ! therefore took charge ot the paper in good | faith. Had we known the contents of the | article referred to, wo.should not have goue • into it without first complying with the j terms of that tgreemeut. If there is any | fraud perpetrated we are not the authors of 1 it. i ! In regard to the offensive language con- I tuined in that letter, I have to say, 1 have ; seen Mr. Robert Jones. lie says he uever read the letter, but signed it as a statement of the facts, aud expresses himself perfectly willing to sign a paper withdrawing it. I j next called on Mr Peek, he never had seen | the manuscript letter and expresses surprise iat what is stated in the printed one. lie assuTos me that lie did not- and never has • blamed me in any manner whatever about i the paper. I next called on Judge Sparks, he exam ned the printed letter and said the offensive language to which I object was a groed to be stricken out before he agreed to sign it, aud states further that he does uot n>w approve of it. Mr. Morrison assured me that upon my statement that I did uot : know the octants of the original agreement, : he is perfectly willing to withdraw it.— Judge Hutchings and Dr Walker both au thor.ze me to say that it is withdrawn so far ;as I am concerned. William Janes states ! that the offensive language contained in ; that letter is predicated upon the presump | tion that we knew all the facts and circum \ stances at the time, so I have no issue with him. I have no doubt as to tiie result of an i interview with the others when I see them, ! for the reason that the insinuations which rest upou our motives in that letter are un just and untrue. That letter did not originate with those whoso names are affixed to it. Most of them i are my neighbors and friends, who have no j desire to injure me It came from one of ; those dark Know Nothing conspiracies of ] which, for the sake of decency, I forbear to speak- The writer of it, who did not sign j it, is a fit representative of Know Nothing- 1 isin.
