Utah,
The existence of polygamy, communism
and all their attendant vices and immuni
ties in an extensive territory of the United
States, is alike repugnant to the genius of
of our government and odious to decency
Religion and humanism is the synonym j for
a combination of all the ills of a licentious
society, unrestrained even l>y the ordinary
instincts which elevate man in his norma I
state, above the brute. Iimworals, in poli
tics, in religion, in everything that contrib
utes to the dignity or bespeaks the superior,
ity of liie human race, it is an outrage upon
man and an iusult to God. And yet in the
most enlightened age, and upon a wide do
main of the nation which claims for its iu
stitutions, the highest excellence that has
yet been attained on earth, and for its citi
zens the fullest liberty, and most loyal re
gard lor reason, right and law, there me a
hundred thousand votaries of this infamous
faith. Outside of Utah, in the adjacent ter
ritories, it is estimated that the Mormons
number an additional two hundred thousand.
It is a state of things horrible to contemplate
presenting a picture of human nature, So
hideous, that the spirits of the damned might
chuckle over it, as unfolding a depth of deg
radation. which even they have never fath
omed That this disgusting deformity upon
the body politic should be removed either by
the emollient influence of moral suasion, or
by the strong arm of the Government, seems
to he the prevailing opinion of the press and
the people in all parts of tne country.—
Whether the Federal Government has the
right, under the Constitution, to coerce the j
.Mormons into a renunciation of their munic
ipal laws relating to property, polygamy
ding on their color.
