that, notwithstanding we furnish the
world with more of tlie precious metal
than any other country, we have a more
mixed currency, a larger amount of pa

globe.
Of all the countries which have had a
mixed currenc 1 ', France from 1S09,
when the Bank of France was establish
he, tip to 1848, (since that time it.has
been changed,) had the most, uniform
and safe—the smallest proportion of cred
it money. Its general average fr«ni 18
09 to 18-3S, according to official state
ments, was as 20 dollars in specie to 24
in bills, or five-sixths of its currency was
value money, making an average adul
teration of only one-sixtb. England has
a currency more fluctuating than was j
that of France. Scotland more fluctu-!
ating than England. That of the Uni- j
ted States more fluctuating than any :
other country in the world, because tliej
proportion of our paper issue to the spe- [
cie capital of our banks is greater than |
any other. Hence the ruinous expan- j
sions and contractions of our circulating;
medium are greater.
AY e have seen it asserted, and do not j
doubt the authority, because perfectfVj
consistent with the foregoing facts, that;
the comparative bankruptcies among j
business men in different countries na-1
mod was as follows: Tn France 15 out
of every 100; England 35 out of every
100; Scotland GO out of every 100; Uni
ted States 80 out of every 100.
YY h en men take into consideration
snch facts as these, thev can no longer

shin plaster currency of the country and
giving place to something nearer a spe-j
