to have their influence felt sufficient to
make everything subordinate to their in
terest The result of a race is more like
ly to depend upon jockeying than upon
the merits of the racers, and this fact is
ltceoming so generally understood that

enough to take it for granted that a horse
is inferior because lie is beaten, or superi
or because he eomes out a victor, would
lie a curiosity.
There are many gentlemen in the South
west engaged in brooding blooded stock
who are interested in having some means
of trying their speed and bottom occasion
ally. The efforts of such have been used
in vain to counteract the evil influences
of the gamblers at race-tracks. The spring
or fall meeting lias come to be nothing
hut a busy season with pick-pockets,
thieves and card-dealers. The booths
which are permitted at the tracks arc j
crowded, and the rolette, chuck-a-luck,
taro, and other tables, are surrounded by .
vouths who are down to sec the races, but j
remembering that the Psalmist has said,
“Let the people praise Thee, then shall
tjic earth yield her increase, .and God,
even our God, shall bless us.”
