of the Cherokee Circuit
The action of eighteen gentlemen in
Dalton cm the 13th infit, claiming to rep
resen t l «ii'counties of the JutBcial Circuit,
demands in my judgment that I should
rafediii present myself before the public,
either on the stump or in the public
prints; at present, I prefer the latter.
Before noticing the action of those as
sembled^ allow me to say that political
assemblies are designated by. different
names; one is called a convention, and
Understood to represent and reflect the
will of the people; another is called a cau
cus, and composed of men who arc whol
ly. irresponsible to any authority, and
represent nobody- ' but themselves. En
quire who sent these gentlemen to Dalton
on the 12th inst, and then decide which
of the two names they are justly entitled
to bear. As an act of courtesy, however,
1 propose for the present to call them a
convention, though I will venture the as
sertion that they did not represent eighty
Citizens of the Circuit, all told, including
themselre*, and yet they assume to act
for, and dictate to eight thousand inde
pendent voters. But let us see what they
•did, and what it is they require the peo
ple to endorse. .
First, they declared their firm attach
ment and adherence to the great princi
ples of Democracy-, enunciated in the Cin
cinnati platform. Well to this there is no
objection, though I am impressed with
the conviction that the perpetuity of the
Union was not to any extent dependent
upon such an announcement by that body.
In the second place, they refused to en
dorse the administration of (iov. Brown,
our present popular Executive. It is true,
they- expressed an approval of his man
agement of the State Boail,. which I ap
prehend no man in Georgia will disap
prove, si) long as it adds £25,000 per
month to the revenue of the State. The
convention will hardly- claim credit for
any very peculiar qualities of discern
ment, for the discovery that this great
State interest, under the direction of its
present officers, is being well managed.—
But unfortunately for the convention, arid
its candidate, in thus endorsing and ap
proving one act, and only one, of Gov.
Brown’s administration, they virtually re
pudiate and reject all his other policy.—
But we are not left to conjecture an infer
ence on this subject. We are informed
by the published proceedings of the con
vention that one of the members offered a
“series of resolutions,” which on motion
were referred to a committee, but we are
not informed what that “ series of resolu
tions” contained. Why is this, gentlemen
of the convention ? Why withhold from
the public that “ series of resolutions,” ,
which were referred to a committee of
one from each county ? Well, as y-ou are
not likely to tell the people why, I will
do so for you. It was, fellow citizens,
simply- because in that “series” there was
a resolution approving the whole adminis
tration of Gov. Brown, which it seems the
controlling influences of the convention
would not swallow. Here is the resolu
tion, just as it was offered and referred,
which being interpreted, means (in this
instance) rejected. ■“ 2d. That we fully
endorse and approve the policy and ad
ministration of Gov. Brown, and com-
niiefid nis management of the State Road
to the earnest consideration of those who
have favored its sale, as a full answer to
their complaints, a complete refutation of
their arguments, ami an indication of the
wisdom of the Democratic policy- in op
posing its sale.” Now this resolution fill-
\j endorsed the entire MIM. of 5-“{Sf#SS SfA ff'j&Sfi
Gov. Brown, and-this resolution the eon- " ~
TfpiUon ref used to adopt, but according to
the report of their proceedings, they
unanimously adopted a substitute, strik
ing out and rejecting all except the man
agement of the State Road. The general
State policy of Gov. Brown and his de
fence of the people against the monied
gOwer Of the Banks, the Dalton conven
tion could not or would not endorse, and
the reason why they did not publish this
part of their proceedings to the world,
was because they knew in thus acting,
they had not expressed the sentiment of
the people they pretended to represent,
and that such a course of action Would be
uripoprilar in this Circuit, when so far as
I mm informed, a large majority of all par-
tip approve the administration of our
present chief magistrate, and are not like-
ljr.to adopt the platform and follow in the
wake of a self-constructed convention,
daiming to represent six of the eight
counties in this Circuit
The tune has arrived when the people
will no longer submit to this sort of dic
tation from a few aspirants for office.—
When the people are consulted, and their
Will expressed; when the people meet in
primary assemblies, and choose delegates
to represent them in convention, no man
has been more ready than I have ever
been, to yield my assent to the will of the
people, thus Curly expressed. When this,
convention was Called, however, I saw, or
thought I saw, that the influences which
would control it would be opposed to the
policy of Gov. Brown. I so said, and
Wrote tomy friends nearly a month be
fore it assembled, and this alone, was a
sufficient reason wEJt I should not permit
mynane to go before it I had been ap
pointed to the office of Solicitor General,
^IlGPT- Brown. I was known to be his
friend, and t« approve his administration,
and had I. been nominated by a? Conven
tion which: manifested hostility to any
P°rti«n of his administration, I couldnot

tion, end certainly would not have
60- The action of this convention demon
strated that I was correct in the
I had formed and expressed, of the ihfeu>y
cnees which would control it, weeks be
fore it assembled.
Bitit wc are presented with tlus singu
lar spectacle, which is quite a new phase
in politics. A convention has met and
adopted a platform, and nominated a can
didate; he accepts the nomination, but at
tempts, in his letter of acceptance, to erect
for himself a more substantial and popu
lar platform upon which to Stand. Now,
if I understand the effect.of accepting a
nomination, it is that the man who ac
cepts pledges himself to run upon the
platform of principles and policy which
the convention has adopted, and when he
gets off of that, he ceases to be the candi
date of the convention.
The office of Solicitor General is to be
filled by an election on the 1st Monday in
January next. It is the business of the
people of this Circuit to elect this officer.
The candidate of the Dalton convention
and myself are before them. When the
people shall have expressed their prefer
ence through the ballot box I shall quiet-
lv submit to their verdict.

London Cordial Gin.
T!IE ORIGINAL AND ONLY LONDON GIN
IMPORTED.
THIS GIN, distilled in
London, from sound Bariev,
under the surveillance of the
British Excise Laws, is del
icately flavored with a
iincture of the Italian Juni-
oer Berry, and some of the
nost valuable restoratives
if the vegetable kingdom,
rendering 1 it in the opinion
»f the most eminent men,
he purest and safest stimu-
ant or diuretic drink, in
use.
It is a delicious tonic, of
1 soft and delicate flavor,
differing entirely from any
other Gin, and devoid of
that harsh, acrid.taste, which renders the art cle
known as Holland Gin or Schnapps so objec
tionable.
Though not intended as a Medicine, it is,
nevertheless recommended by Physicians ^eis-
erallj’ in cases of Dyspepsia, Gout, Rheuma
tism, Ooi.ic, Dropsy, Gravel, Cholera, Fe
ver and Ague, Stricture, Diseases of the
Urixary Organs, the Kidneys, ni.d the Bow
els, Nervous Debility, Ac , whilst the weaker
sex, by its use will invariably find a relief from
those distressing annoyances which frequently
attend their delicate organization.
Dr. Valentine Mott, of New York, the high
est medical authority, says: “In some cases I
recommend pure Holland Gin as a medicine.
Charles' London Cordial Gin contains a larger
quantitj’ of Juniper, and I consider it a far
superior article; iu fact, the best I have ever
seen.”
It is peculiarly adapted to residents in the
Southern and Western Srates, as well as fi»r
travellers exposed to changes of water and air.
For sale in quarts and pints by all Druggists,
Grocers, Fruiterers and country merchants.
