clay an’fl lcachcil ashes on to his land.—
But, after all, these arc but helps; the
barn yard must be his reliance. Here is
the farmer’s treasure. Leaves, straw, hay,
muck—anything animal, vegetable or min-
al, may be added with profit. Effort must
be used to accumulate manure, care to
preserve, and a liberal hand to spread it.
THc manure from twenty-five head of
cattle, if properly taken care of will in
crease the yield of corrt, on eight acres of
ground, from fifty-fiivc to fifty bushels per
acre.
The cultivation of the corn crop fits the
manure for a crop of wheat, so that the
same manure adds two hundred bushels
of corn the first year, and adds most as
much, in proportion, to the wheat crop the
second year. After the wheat crop, the
ground is then in fine condition for a crop
of clover. Each head of cattle, with pro-
cr care in raising it will produce 4 cords
of manure during the season of foddering,
and every cord of manure is worth two
dollars.
Without manure, no part of the world
can continue fertile under the exhausting
process of cultivation If the father, with
out returning a equivalent to the soil, ob
tains large crops, he will entail a barren
soil to his children.
Farmers, then, should have all their ma
nure, and the liquid is more valuable than
the solid. There is nitrogen enough in a
pint of urin to make a pound of wheat. To
allow it to go to waste is as wasteful as to
throw ;uvay wheat by the pound. Stables
and barn yards should be so constructed
that the liquid manure may run into a
bowl shaped reservoir, and that kept sup
plied With straw, bones, muck or other
nbsorbents that will detain it and its gases.
The manure from the stable should be
thrown ipto heaps, and sheltered from the
rain and snow, to prevent it from heating,
and by opening the heap, or otherwise, it
should be kept from burning.
All the weeds should he pulled up be
fore they go to seed, and put iuto the barn
yard, for the cattle to manufacture into
manure, for every farmer should know
that it exhausts the soil as much to ma
nure a crop of weeds as it docs a crop of
grain.
In the spring every place containing
manure should be cleared for the benefit
of the field, and for the beauty of the farm.
But the judgment as required even in
the use of a good thing—and to apply the
same quantity and quality of manure to
all crops, is as injudicious as to give the
same quantity and quality of food to all
animals.
