An Immeoie JEriml Ship-Tram Hew
Y*rk to London in Forty-Eight
Hoorn.
The Times contains an account of a new
*rial ship, which is in course of construc
tion. about four miles from this city, un
der direction of the aeronaut, T. S. C.
I/jwc, of New Hampshire, a man who is
said to have made thirty-six balloon as
censions. The new aerial ship has been
christened the City of New York, and is
designed for a trans-Atlantic voyage,
is five times larger than the largest bal
loon ever before built. Us dimensions arc
os follows:
Greatest diameter—feet 130
Transverse do do 104
Height, from valve to boat—feet 350
Weight, with outfit—tons 3$
Lifting power (aggregate)—tons 22$
Capacity of gas envelope—cubic feet
725,000
Six thousand y ards, or fifty-four thou
sand square feet, of twilled cloth have
been used in the construction of the en
velope, and seventeen sewing machines
have been employed in connecting the
pieces. The upper extremity of the en
velope, intended to receive the gas valve,
is of triple thickness, strengthened with
heavy brown linen, and sewed in triple
seams. The pressure being greatest at
this point, extraordinary power of resis
tance is requisite. It is asserted that one
hundred women, sewing constantly for
two years, could not have accomplished
this work which measures by miles.—
The material is stout, and the stitching
stouter.
The varnish applied to this envelope is
a composition, the secret of which rests
with Mr. Lowe. Three or four coatings
are applied, in order to prevent leakage of
the gas.
The netting around the envelope is e-
qual to one hundred and sixty tons. The
basket is circular—twenty feet in circum
fercncc, and four feet deep. It is to be
warmed by a lime stone, which is to fur
nish heat without fire. Below the basket
is a metalic life boat, containing an Erics
son engine, designed to control a propel
ler, by which means it is believed a regu
lating power may be obtained. The pro
peller is fixed in the bow of the life boat,
projecting at an angle of about forty-five
degrees. From a wheel at the extremity
fans radiate. Each of these fans is five
feet in length, widening gradually from
the point of contact with the screw to the
extremity, where the width of each is one
and a half feet. Mr. Lowe claims that by
the application of these mechanical contri
vance, his air ship can be readily raised or
lowered, to seek different currents oftair;
that they will give him ample steerage
way, and that they will prevent the rota-
ry motion of the machine.
Mr. Lowe expresses complete confidence
in his aerial ship, and declares his purpose
to start for Europe with it, and hopes to
make the trip to London in forty-eight
hours. The enterprise involves an ex
pense of twenty thousand dollars. The
time for the ascension is not definitely fix
cd, hut the event will probably occur in
three or four weeks.
A Mormon Elder’s Speech.
The Valley Tan, of the 10th of August,
has the following sketch of Kimball’s ad
dress before the Saints:
Send on your armies ; they can do no
harm. God will look after the welfare ot
this people, and shield them from all inju
ry'. Let your armies do their best—their
“purtiest”—they can’t effect anything.
I respect officials who perform their of-
ficia’ duties as they should, and leave the
Mormon people alone; but bow can I re
spect my enemies ? How can I respect a
Judge who docs his Iwsst to injure innocent
jwoplc ? I know what they want: they
want to nab Brigham Young, and then
they want me and others. They' will nab
him, ton, when God wants them to:—but
God wont let them nab biui, and they
can’t nab me. [Laughter.] I fear them
about as much as a pis-ant ^ not quite so
much either, for a pis-ant will bite my leg
once in a while. I am the son of a Revo
lutionary sire, who struggled for the lib
erty of this country, and am going to have
religious freedom. I have always observ
ed the laws, and mean to be protected by'
them in my religious belief the same as
the people of New England are. As they
treat us they will be treated. The United
States will see something worse than we
ever saw before fifteen years—see it from
the head of the government down. Famine
upon famine, mob after mob, civil-discord
from one end of the country to the other,
terrible whirlwinds, and swift destruction
will be their certain doom.
The country has done some big fight
ing, but it can’t beat Mormonism. There
are four thousand elders in foreign lands
preaching Mormonism—nearly all foreign
ers. There are forty or fifty or sixty or
ganized quorums of Seventies. Suppose
they kill all the members of this church
but an elder. From that small seed our
principles would again be given to the
world, and our cause prosper like the Can
ada thistle. When they persecute us, it
is like breaking a mustard stalk—the stroke
only causes an increase, by more thorough
ly scattering the seed.
Speaking of thistles reminds me of a
bright idea of Greeley’s. He thought it
would be a wise notion to sow Canada
thistles all along the plains, between here
and the States, to feed stock upon. Why
that would kill all the cattle with the
bloody murrian and prick us to death.—
So much for Greeley’s judgment What
a fruitful imagination he must have 1 He
is the greatest liar on the fece of the earth.
Why, bless your soul, he is the father of
all liars. He will go to hell, and be the
fetharof liars there. Amen. [“Amen”
sounding throughout the congregation.]
New You, Sept 18.—There was a kil
ling frost and a snow storm in central
New York on the night of tbfi 14th iaat
Mocsr Versos.—We learn -from the
Mount Vernon Record that the work of
putting Mount Vernon in good condition
has been fairly begun. Since the first of
July, workmen, under the superintend
ence of a competent gentleman, have been
busily engaged in repairing out-houses,
tracing and cleaning up the old and al
most forgotten paths, and fortifying in
some measure the sacred spot against tbc
ravages of decay. The Record also states

The celebrated Copper Toe.
MITCHELL’S
Patent Metallic Tip,
DESIGNED ESPECIALLY FOR
BOYS’, YOUTHS’ AND CHILDREN’S
Boots and Shoes.
A N improvement has been applied to Boots
and Shoes, by which a saving of expense
to the consumer, of two-thirds, is realized, by
actual experiineut.
THE TIP consists of a piece of copper or
other indestructible material, neatly fastened
to the toe of the boot or shoe, fornuug a com-
plete protection. This invention is now pre
sented to the public, with the fullest knowl
edge of its practical utility, having been test
ed over two Tears, and is destined eiiiirelv to
supercede the old style, for children’s, boys’
and youths’ boots and shoes.
The importance of this invention will be
readily appreciated, as it is known that chil
dren invariably wear out their boots and shoes
first at the toe, and with this protection, they
will upon an average wear at least two or three
times as long as tne old style, while the ex
pense is but a trifle more.
This invention is also especially applicable
to miners’ boots, and all occupations subject-
inn. the toe of the boot or shoe to be cut or
worn.
Merchants, and the public generally, will
see the importance of obtaining these goods
immediately, as they are destined, for general
use, to supercede all other kinds.
The goods may be obtained of nearly all the
wholesale dealers in the principal cities, or ot
the subscribers, (owners of the patent,)
