From the National American. ’
The Mineral Resources of Georgia.— 1
Letter From Hon. M. A. Cooper.
A son of T. A. Swearingen, of Mitchel ^ akcr ’
To the Elitnr of the National American: ^county, Ga., was thrown from a mule and
killed, recently.
Dear Sir—The magnitude of the Mine
ral Resources of Northern Georgia are but
little known to, and less appreciated, by
the people of our State. No estimate is
put on them even by tbe people of Chero
kee, within whose limits they are found
ii^such rieh abundance. Iron, Gold, Cop
per, Plumbago, chiefly with traces of Lead
Silver, Cabalt and Tin, and Marble and
Slate in great quantity. For the develop
ment of these, but little is done, except in
Gold, Iron, Marble and Slate . Products
of these are being furnished daily. The
most important of these is Iron, because
most useful. We pro nose to consider tbe
resources of this metal in Northern Geor
gia, its products as manufactured, and the
interest that Georgia, as a commonwealth,
has in it.
With no little opportunity to observe,
we have ventured the assertion, that the
resources of Northern and Western Geor
gia, in Iron Ore, are superior to any por
tion of the Union. That they arc far bet
ter than any of the Middle or Eastern
States, is beyond doubt. That they excel
those of the Western States, not except
ing Missouri, with her far-famed Iron
M mntain, is maintained by competent ge
ologists who have examined both.
/fdiis Iron district lies North-East and
South-West, coming down from North and
South Carolina, Floyd, Pauldingand Polk
counties. Ir passes through the interme
diate counties, comprising a belt of fifty
to seventy-five miles—the best supply and
most convenietUJacality for it being in
Cass county. (This county alone, it is be
lieved, lias concentrated in its limits, as
much Iron Ore as all Pennsylvania togeth
er. and is of superior quality. Here are
found the chief operations in Iron of the
Slate of Georgia. This Iron and Gold re
gion of Georgia, (they lie contiguous.) is
traversed by the Etowah River, from its
source to its junction with the Oostcnaula
at Rome.
That part of it which lies in Cass coun
ty has been partially explored by Geolo
gists who are familiar with all the re
markable localities in the Union. To
at such time and place as may be agreed
on, to nominate a candidate for Solicitor-
General of the Cherokee Circuit
