Il would appear that in Russia, as well as in many other countries a lock of hair is considered a significant pledge of the tender passions ; but il tho truth must be told, few of our theatrical divinities are endowed with profuse chtre-^ lens, and if they were, the incessant de mand would soon exhaust the supply.— Mademoiselle Alice glories in the posses sion of auburn ringlets, and wouldn’t part with one of them for less than a duchy.— Her Russian admirers, the Count de L. and the Baron de M., both nappen to have hair of the same golden hue as that of their mutual dulccna. Each begged for a tress of her hair in exchange for a lock of his ou n, to which the charming crea ture readily assented, and without touch ing a single curl cf her head, cunningly managed to effect an exchange of parcels, by which each gentleman received a tuft of his rivals capillaries. The count now wears the baron’s ‘wool’ next his heart, and tlie baron sleeps with the count’s scalp-lock under his pillow. Augusta, Ga., Feb. 2 -6m Tale of an Elephant. Tell my grandchildren, said the late Rt. Rev. Daniel Wilson, writ'ng home front India, that an elephant here had a disease in his eyes. For three days lie had been completely blind. His owner an engineer cfficecr, asked my dear Mr. Webb if he could do anything to relieve the poor ani mal. The doctor said he would try ni trate of silver, which was a remedy com monly applied to similar diseases in the human eye. The huge animal was order ed to lie down, and at first, on the appli cation of the remedy, raised a most extra ordinary roar at the acute pain which it occasioned. The effect, however, was wonderful. The eye was, in r, manner, restored, and the animal could partially see. The next day, when he was brought and heard the doctor’s voice, he laid down of himself, placed his enormous head on one side, curled up his trunk, drew in bis breath just like a man about to endure an operation, gave a sigh of relief when it was over, and then, by trunk and gestures evidently wished to express his gratitude.
