: Yours of the 19th ult, in-
(orliking me that I was unanimonely selec
ted by the convention of the National
Detnowney ofthis State held a MillcdgVitle
on the 14th ef Augnst, as the elector for
W»e fifth Congressional District, and ask
ing my acceptance of the “high trust re-
possd hi me as the standard-bearer of the
principles which have been the watchword
of the National Democrats,” is now before
me. A protracted absence of'near two
months from the State has prevented an
earlier reception of your letter which ac
counts for any seeming delay on my piirt
in replying to your Cummanrcaticm. '.'
Believing as I do, that the interest of
the South and the perpetuity of tlie Union
are identified with the success of the prin
ciples which wc avow,I mosthcartfly con-
curwith theparty in the patriotic effortnow
being made to push them to a triumphant'
issue. I need pot, therefore, say to you
that I am teady, zealously to co-operate
with you and all good men in their advo
cacy.
i accept the post assigned me, grateful
for the ho: conferred, only regretting
that this “high trust” was not committed
to abler, if not more devoted hands,
shail proceed at once to the task before
me, and ijf when the battle is over, and
the dost of the conflict gone victory does
net perch upon our banner, It shall not
be attributed to any lack of energetic
seal on my part.
Tendering through you to the party my
greatful acknowledgments for the honor
conferred upon me, be pleased, gentlemen
to acoept for yourselves nssuranccs of the
respectful regard of your friend and fellow
citizen. JAMFS W, HARRIS.

Important Decision of the Supreme
Court.
Yesterday morning, the Supreme Court
, In the case of Bank of Georgetown vs
James Morris, made a decision in which
a large portion of our fellow-citizens have
a deep interest, especially that class who
pay thair debts according to law. The
principle of few decided by the court was
!,a clerk of the Supcri-
vgmtror oai Otolc;*nptii*Jt
Judgment obtained in their courts is no
valid pwrmerA In few, of tlie debt, the
derk feet being a legal collecting officer of
«*** t, in cases of this sort.” We say
then to all our fellow-citizens, who may
be so unfortunate as to be sued for tbeir
debts, when vOu make a payment, have
the credit entered oh the execution, take
the Sheriff's receipt or that of the Attor
ney lor thoplaintiff in execution. This is
the only safe plan. The Supreme court
does not make the law of this State, hut
they decide what the law is, and their de
cision is final So in a Justices court—
If you-undertake to settle a ca^e in that
court, pay the money to the Bailiff dr the
Attorney for the plaintiff, if ho has one,
and be certain to take the receipt of the
party to. whom the money is paid; take
his receipt fo. the same, and have the a-
raouot entered upon the ff fa. There is
no safety eutsida of this programme. Wc
knew n case, in the county where we once
resided^ where an honest farmer, in mod
erate circumstances paid the amount due
on an execution to the clerk of the court
feom which the execution was issued.—
The cierk misapplied' the funds, the-old
f„ if pay the debt a second-time,
nadkift pecuniary rain was the conse
quence. We say to our readers, look to
ike declaim* of the Supreme court,' and

The Oxygenated Bitters.
The qualities of tbir medicines have placed
A upon an imperishable foundation. Ia de.
stroving .disease, and inducing health, it has
no parallel.
For Urn following complaints these bitters
are a specific, viz—Dyspepsia, or Indigestion,
Heart Hum, Aridity, Coeticenees, Loss of Ap
petite, Headache and Genesal Debility.
In many sections of our conntry this prepa
ration is. extensively used by physicians in their
practice, and it seems to have restored many
to health who were apparently beyond the
reach of the healing art.

Having derived benefit from the use of the Ox

and its attendant evils, I consider it a remedy
of inestimable-value. W. A. HASP.

Gentlemen :—After suffering for thirty years
with Dyspepsia, and trying many remedies re
commended for that disease without any good
result, I was induced by Dr. F. H. White to
give the Oxygenated fetters a trial: I took
two bottles, which gave me niueh relief; I
concluded to try two more, which havt'neariy
or quite effected a cure. I anr sow neatly sev
enty-five years of age, and for three month*
past have eaten my food without experiencing
the slightest inconvenience or suffering, and it
is with pleasure thst I recommend your reme
