A Woman’s View of the Woman
Question.
I recognize that t'ti a large and
important department of the work of
the world is Intrusted by God to wo
men, and men cannot do it, so a large
and important department of the
work of the world is intrusted by God
to men, and women cannot do it.
Herein is no superior or inferior,
butjdivine adaptation of means to end.
If women undertake to bear the
whole bnrden they must fail. If,
true to the teachings of Christ, they
seek perfect womanly development
and influence, they must succeed.
I believe that in his heart every good
man wishes that women would con
tent themselves with being women,
and keeping alive in the world the
sweetness, gentleness, and beauty,
the ripe Christian culture, the dili
gence in duty, which are to him the
poetry of life, the pure wine inspiring
in him all courtesy and provident
care and chivalrous homage. Solo
mon, Homer, Dante, Spenser, Shake
speare, Browning, have painted wo
man as man loves her, have granted
us the gift of “seeing ourselves
aa others see us”. They are
old-fashioned master-peices. The
free-hand drawing of the present,
with notoriety-loving, office-seeking
women for models, would hardly
equal them. Vet the ideal woman of
the world’s seers still lives in thou
sands of homes and works in number
lees enterprises for the world’s uplift,
ing. The old-fashioned domestic
virtues, the old fashioned modesty
the old-fashioned fruits of the lioly
Spirit are still with added intellect
ual vigor, enshrined in her. God
grant we may never outgrow such an
idea!—New York Christian Advocate.
Grandma to little grandson who is
“McGinty” on the piano
Sunday morning: “My dear, that
does not sound like Sunday music.”
Small musician: “O, yes, grandma;
that’s about a bad, wicked man who
was drowned for going fishing on
Suuday.”
Total Depraity.
The other day a friend gave us
what was considered by an old friend
of his the strongest evidence of liuuan
depravity. It was the fact that every
one was disposed to laugh when an
other fell. This, he said, was a nat
ural disposition and universal. Chil
dren, however young, would laugh
if another child fell, and so on to the
oldest. This was depravity. It is
a strange, sad disposition. But the
sadest thing of all is that men and
women who claim to have been regen
erated, and even ministers of the
gospel in high places, are (lisp* sed to
rejoice if onother fails or fails. A
brother preacher has an important
Church’or some post of trust, and he
is watched with a jealous eye, and if
there are any mistakes or signs of
failure there are evidences of secret,
if not open, gratification. We can
conceive of no deeper depravity, and
nothing is more contemptible. The
disposition is a shame to the name of
Christianity, and is foreign to the
hope of heaven. If there is a preach
er anywhere who has any of this spirit
in him, ho ought to quit preaching
long enough to get at least a little
religion.—Wesleyan Advocate.
The local divorcement bill grinds

an unenviable reputation as a rival of
Chicago in this business.—Atlanta
Journal.
Little Harry came rushing into the
house one day, saying: “Mamma, Mr.
Clark is sick." “Is he?" said his
mother. “What's the matter with
him “The doctor says it’s a theo
retic throat," ho answered.
It is a significant fact that the cost
liest building planned for the Chicago
fa:r is the office of the administration.
If the show doesn’t bankrupt Chi
